Hester impressive in debut; young Muleriders solid at Central Region Preview

True freshman finishes three-over in 36-hole tournament behind an even par effort in round two

BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. – As impressive as she was in her first collegiate round of action on Tuesday after shooting a 75 (+3), true freshman Emma Hester was even better on Wednesday from the par-72, 5,910-yard course of the Adams Pointe Golf Club as she fired an even par round at 72 (E) to climb six spots on the leaderboard and land inside the top 15 of the 86-golfer field at 13th with a 36-hole total of 147 (+3). Southern Arkansas finished 14th after shooting a collective 646 (+70) and was just 16 strokes back of the field's top ten. The 646 as a team is tied for the 12th best round in the program's GolfStat Era.

Hester's even par effort saw her birdie No. 11, No. 18 and No. 2 to card just the fifth round at par or better in the program's GolfStat Era and she is just the third different player to do so. The 147 across two rounds of play is tied for the second-best low 36-hole total in that same time span and is bettered only by GAC All-Decade honoree Helle Leed.

She was one of 13 golfers to shoot even or better on par 3 holes and finished even in par 5 opportunities. Hester's 26 made pars were the fourth-most in the entire field and she notched four birdies.

Hester wasn't the only true freshman to make some noise for the Muleriders on Wednesday. Aubrey Marx shaved eight strokes off of her Tuesday total of 84 to card a 76 and finish inside the top 50 with a 160 (+16). Marx finished at +1 on par 5 holes and at +2 on par 3s. She matched Hester with four birdies and followed with 17 made pars.

Junior Chelsea Chow recorded 19 made pars and posted consecutive rounds at 84, freshman Anna Cain finished with a 171 across two rounds of play in her collegiate debut and sophomore Kelsey Saveall shot a 177 for the tournament. Cain added 13 made pars and notched the first two birdies of her career, while Saveall recorded eight pars and a pair of birdies.

As a team, the Muleriders totaled 83 pars and a dozen birdies.

Southern Arkansas turns its attention to the Northeastern State Fall Classic from the Cherokee Hills Golf Club in Catoosa, Oklahoma on Monday, September 12 and Tuesday, September 13. Live scoring, if available, will be accessible at www.MuleriderAthletics.com.
