Muleriders fall in Central Region opener; Await loser of ATU, AUGIE

EDMOND, Okla. – Taking on host team and 2nd seeded University of Central Oklahoma in their sixth straight Central Regional Tournament round matchup, the Southern Arkansas University softball team fell 3-2 on walk off single in the bottom of the 7th inning. SAU moves to the loser's bracket with the loss, and will await the loser of Arkansas Tech and Augustana University for tomorrow's 3:30 P.M. matchup.

A pitchers dual throughout the first four innings, UCO was able to get on the board first in the bottom of the fifth inning. After reaching on a walk and advancing on a throwing error, Rutland came around to score for the Bronchos as she was singled in to take a 1-0 lead. With two outs in the fifth inning, the Muleriders were able to plate their first run of the regional to tie the game at 1-1. Madison Miller reached first on a single to left center, and was pinch ran for by Viviana Zarzoza, who would come around to score on an Alese Casper double to deep left center.

UCO would get on the board again to take a one run lead in the bottom of the next frame, as Rirtz doubled down the left field line to score Minter to take a 2-1 lead. Grad Transfer Taylor Murphy started the top of the seventh inning off with a solo blast (third of the year) on a full count pitch after almost knocking two over in prior pitches that were just foul to tie the game at 2-2. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bronchos were able to get their leadoff hitter on base after she reached on a single up the middle. After recording two outs on a strikeout and a pop up to short, UCO was able to connect on another single and have a runner on third after she reached on an error to get into scoring position. Minter was able to single up the middle to score Rutland from third to take the game 3-2.

The Muleriders finished with six hits in the game to UCO's nine. Murphy led SAU with two hits, an RBI and a run. Casper finished with one run and one RBI, while M. Miller, Mariah Hamilton, and Alyssa Miller all connected base knocks.

Sydney Ward had a solid start in the circle and battled for six innings as she gave up six hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out two. Kiana Pogroszewski took the loss as she pitched .2 innings and allowed three hits on one run (zero earned).
