ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – (RV) Southern Arkansas pushed across three runs in the fourth inning to retake the lead at 5-3 in Friday afternoon's Great American Conference series opener at Henderson State and then added a single insurance runs in both the fifth and seventh innings to claim a 7-4 win over the Reddies from Dee White Field.
The victory is the tenth consecutive for the Muleriders and pushes the team's overall mark to 22-11 with a 15-3 record in league play. SAU struck first as RBI singles by
Jaxynn Dyson and
Gracie King in the top of the first inning staked Mulerider starter
Sydney Ward to an early 2-0. The Reddies responded in the home half with three runs on three hits, two of which were home runs, to take a 3-2 lead and end Ward's day early after just a third of an inning.
Kiana Pogroszewski entered in relief to finish the first and proceeded to work six more innings in the circle allowing four hits, a walk and an earned run, while striking out seven batters and getting more than enough run support beginning with the aforementioned profitable fourth for the Muleriders offensively.
A double by
Madison Miller in the fourth plated King and tied the game at 3-3 and set the table for a go-ahead, two-run blast off the bat of
Tiare Lee that put SAU up 5-3 through four innings of play. A walk to
Taylor Murphy in the fifth plated SAU's sixth run and after HSU plated a lone run in the sixth, Murphy grabbed it back with an RBI single to give SAU a 7-4 lead.
Dyson and King each recorded two hits with King scoring twice, while Lee and Murphy each delivered two RBI. Murphy walked twice as did
Jade Miller.
The two teams will decide a series winner on Saturday in Arkadelphia with a doubleheader scheduled for a 2 p.m. start. Live coverage links are available at www.
