MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Southern Arkansas combined for 23 hits over two games with ten of those going for extra bases and freshman right hander
Sydney Ward allowed just four hits in a five-inning, complete game effort in Wednesday's opener as the Muleriders split with Arkansas-Monticello in Great American Conference action with a 10-1 (5) win in the game one and a 6-5 (8) loss in game two from Dawson Field inside the Dr. Margaret Downing Softball Complex.
The Muleriders (12-11, 5-3 GAC) cruised in the first game as a seven-run fourth inning highlighted the offensive outburst. Grad transfer
Madison Miller launched a solo shot in the second inning, doubled home a run in the fourth, and senior
Sarah Evans belted a two-run shot as part of that seven-run frame. Ward picked up three strikeouts and walked just one to earn her seventh win of the season.
SAU thrice tied the second game as senior
Alese Casper doubled home a run in the third to even the game at a run apiece. Miller would give SAU a 2-1 lead in the same frame on a sacrifice fly. UAM regained control in the fourth inning holding a 4-2 advantage into the fifth before Evans claimed her second two-run blast of the day to match the Blossoms' four runs through five innings. Trailing 5-4 in the sixth, freshman
Gracie King dropped a shot over the left field foul pole to tie the game at 5, but the Muleriders stranded a
Jade Miller triple at third with just one out in the sixth and would be unable to push across a runner at second in the seventh, before going down in order in the eighth.
Grad transfer
Baylie Thornhill and freshman
Macie Welch both worked 2.1 innings in relief of game two starter
Kiana Pogroszewski who tossed 3.1 with three strikeouts and two earned runs allowed.
J. Miller delivered six hits on the day, scored twice and recorded two RBI. M. Miller collected four hits, two runs and three RBI, while Casper notched four hits, scored four times and added a pair of RBI.
The Muleriders return to action on Saturday for a 2 p.m. series opener against Ouachita in Magnolia. Sunday's DH is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start. Live coverage links are available at
