Mulerider Volleyball Sweeps CBU in Game One of Union Invitational

JACKSON, TENN. – The Southern Arkansas University Volleyball team picked up their third win of the season on Friday night, as they took down Christian Brothers University in a 3-0 sweep in their first game at the Union University Volleyball Invitational. The Muleriders were able to hold the Buccaneers under 20 points in each set as SAU won (25-20, 25-18, 25-15). This is SAU's second win over CBU in the last two weeks, as the two teams met back on September 4.

The first set saw CBU jump out to an early 4-1, and they continued to lead until SAU quickly battled back to tie it at 7-7. The two squads would continue to trade points back and forth as neither could team could pull away. SAU then used a strong push at the end of the set resulting in a 7-2 run to pick up the set win.

Southern Arkansas was able to jump out to an early 8-4 lead in the second set, but CBU had an answer as they would battle back to tie it at 10-10. Much like set one, neither team could seem to pull away as the set was tight throughout the majority of the contest. Holding a one point lead at 19-18, SAU was able to make another strong push as they used a 6-0 run to close out set two 25-18.

Set three saw the Muleriders cruise past the Buccaneers as they quickly jumped out to an 8-3 lead and never looked back. CBU cut it close at 13-10, however the Muleriders would go on to use a 15-5 run to close out the set and win the game.

The Muleriders had two players finish with double-digit kills as Victoria White finished with a game high 11, and Abby Bermudez tallied 10. Landry Rogers was one kill away as she finished the contest with 9 kills. Bermudez, and Landry also collected one block a piece.

Morgan Schuster finished with a game high 31 assists, to go along with eight digs. Bailey Kirk collected a team high 11 digs. Bermudez, Schuster, and Alexa Hear all collected two service aces.

Southern Arkansas had a .300 attack percentage in the contest, and held CBU to a .081. Bermudez hit .450, while White swung .375.

The Muleriders will return to the court tomorrow morning as they are set to play back-to-back matches against Carson-Newman University at 11 a.m., followed by Union University at 1 p.m.
