TOPEKA, Kan. – The Southern Arkansas Women's Tennis team wrapped up its regular season schedule this weekend in Kansas with a win over Emporia State and losses to #18 Washburn and Northwest Missouri. The final four dates of the Muleriders' schedule all included games as SAU battled four tough opponents in as many days. The Muleriders enter the postseason at 6-12 overall with a 3-3 record in Great American Conference play.
In Friday's match at Emporia State, the Muleriders bounced back from a 4-2 loss to Southeastern Oklahoma (Wins by
Lena Milosevic (6-4, 6-2) over SOSU's Zulay Castaneda &
Serena Gill (6-4, 7-6) over SOSU's Vanessa Nitu) in the GAC finale to beat the Hornets 4-3.
In that victory, Southern Arkansas claimed wins by Milosevic at No. 1 and impressive three-set wins by
Sarah Roy,
Kalley Smith and
Haylie Hunger at lines three through five, respectively. Smith's victory at No. 4 clinched the match for SAU who rallied after dropping the doubles point. The win for Hunger was her second of the season and marked the first ever time that she played into a third set.
The next day the Muleriders lost 5-1 to #18 Washburn. Milosevic won in straight sets at No. 1 with a 6-3, 6-4 showing over Ichabod No. 1 Marta Torres. On Sunday, which marked the aforementioned fourth match for the SAU Women in as many days, SAU dropped its regular season finale to Northwest Missouri 4-2. Milosevic and Gill both won at the top two lines and Smith and Roy claimed a win at No. 1 doubles. Both Smith and Roy forced a third set in singles play before each match was left unfinished.
The Mulerider Women turn their attention to the GAC Tournament which begins on Thursday, April 22 in Bentonville, Arkansas. Southern Arkansas, league tournament winners in 2019, will enter the postseason as defending GAC Tournament Champions and is currently in line for the league's No. 4 seed.
