Baker’s Walkoff Sends Muleriders Past Texas A&M-Texarkana in Home Opener

Southern Arkansas collects a dozen hits, plates five runs in final two innings to top Eagles

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Sophomore Riley Orr legged out a fielder's choice that plated redshirt freshman Matt Aiken to tie Tuesday evening's back-and-forth affair at 10 and in the ensuing at bat, senior Austin Baker dropped an RBI single into right field to score sophomore Ty Manning as the Muleriders walked off Texas A&M-Texarkana 11-10 from inside Walker Stadium at Goodheart Field. The collegiate baseball action in Magnolia was the first in 371 days and those in attendance were treated to a nonconference contest that saw a combined 21 runs on 22 hits allowed by 10 pitchers who issued 19 walks and stranded 18 base runners.

The Muleriders (6-4) were led by Baker's 4-for-5 effort with two RBI and three runs scored. Senior Kobe Morris went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored and freshman Chris Lyles went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Both Morris and Lyles deposited baseballs outside the confines of the stadium as Morris' two-run blast in the fifth inning tied the game at 4, while Lyles' missile landed on the Wilkins Stadium concession stand in the eighth inning which served as the first two runs of the aforementioned productive final two innings at the plate for the Muleriders.

SAU scored runs in the first and second innings, but trailed 4-2 after the Eagles (11-7) scored four runs in the visiting half of the fourth inning. TAMUT added four more runs on a grand slam in the sixth to take an 8-4 lead but the Muleriders responded in the bottom half of the inning with RBI singles from Baker and Morris.

The final two runs of the night for the Eagles came on a bases loaded walk and a wild pitch as TAMUT led 10-6 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning.

After SAU pushed across three runs in the home half of the eighth inning, Mulerider reliever Maddux Solomon struck out TAMUT's Chris McGinty with runners at second and third to end the threat and keep the SAU deficit at 10-9 and set the stage for Orr and Baker's final act.

The Eagles used seven pitchers in the loss. SAU started with sophomore Jacob Womack who went 5.0 innings allowing four runs on eight hits. Freshman Isaiah Haynes made his Mulerider debut as he tossed two innings in relief of Womack. Solomon earned the win after tossing the eighth and the ninth innings allowing just one run on four walks with three strikeouts.

Southern Arkansas returns to action on Friday as a three-game Great American Conference series with Ouachita begins at 6 p.m. with a single nine-inning game. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start. Live coverage links are available at www.MuleriderAthletics.com.
