SAU Women Play Tight Matches over the Weekend in Wichita Falls

Muleriders competitive despite four losses in Texas

| Box Score 4 WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Southern Arkansas Women's Tennis suffered four losses this past weekend at the Midwestern State Invitational. Despite the defeats, the Mulerider Women were improved especially on day two as they battled Cameron (L, 4-3) and #16 Midwestern State (L, 4-3) down to the wire. In Friday's action, Southern Arkansas lost 4-2 to UT-Tyler and 4-1 to #14 Southwest Baptist. The Muleriders' record falls to 1-7 on the season.
 
In the match with Cameron, the doubles teams of Serena Gill / Honoka Yoshimura and Sarah Roy / Kalley Smith both won to give SAU the match's first point and the team's lone double point of the weekend. Roy and Smith won at No. 2 in the match between UT-Tyler but the Patriots claimed wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
 
Against the Aggies, Angela Vargas won at line one with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Karolina Glowinska and Yoshimura claimed a victory at line six with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Melany Opolz. In the match against the Patriots, Vargas won at line one and Roy claimed a victory at line three. Vargas battled back after a first set loss to win, while Gill and Yoshimura forced a third set in both of their defeats.
 
Gill claimed the lone victory for the SAU Women in the contest against #14 Southwest Baptist. She defeated Elsa Pascual 6-0, 6-2.
 
The Mulerider Women battled nationally-prominent Midwestern State as Vargas edged the Mustang's top line player Tiffany Hollebeck 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, while SAU also received wins from Roy (7-5, 6-4 vs. Emilija Visic) and Yoshimura (7-6, 6-2 vs. Ethne Dowling). Two of the losses in singles action for the Muleriders went to three sets (Lena Milosevic at No. 2 and Kalley Smith at No. 6) as SAU nearly pulled off the upset of host MSU.
 
The Mulerider Women return to action on Tuesday, March 9 at 2 p.m. for the 2021 home opener as Arkansas Tech comes to Magnolia for a nonconference matchup. Greg Owen's squad will put an unbeaten 14-0 record at the Live Oaks Tennis Courts on the line against the Golden Suns. Results will be made available at www.MuleriderAthletics.com.
