Arkadelphia – The SAU Women's Basketball team opens their GAC Tournament run tonight on the road against Ouachita Baptist. The Muleriders, who are the five seed from the Eastern Division, clinched their seeding this past Saturday with an 88-76 victory over Harding.
Ouachita Baptist earned the four seed after going 3-4 in the regular season, with wins over the Muleriders as well as Henderson State and Arkansas-Monticello.
This marks only the fourth time the Muleriders have qualified for the GAC Tournament, and a win for the Muleriders would be their first conference tournament win since 2016, their only tournament win since joining the GAC in 2011.
This will be a matchup of top-five scoring offenses in the league, with the Muleriders 82.9 points per game ranking third in the GAC and Ouachita's 76.7 points being fifth.
In their only matchup this season, the Tigers beat the Muleriders 102-86 in Arkadelphia.
Individually, Ouachita's Makayla Miller is second in the conference with 19 points per game, and teammate Eden Crow is not too far behind with 16.6 points per game.
The Muleriders are led offensively by
Diamond Morris with 13.4 points per game. Morris also leads the team with 309 minutes played, the only player to pass 300 minutes for the Muleriders this season.
Kisi Young is right behind Morris in scoring with 13.2 points per game. The Magnolia native is shooting 52.8 percent from the field this season and grabs a team-high 5.8 rebounds per game.
Ariana Guinn and
Jessica Jones are averaging 11.7 and 11.6 points per game, with Guinn shooting 41.9 percent from the field and 47.8 percent from three-point range, and Jones shooting 45 percent from the field and 41.9 percent from three on a team-high 86 attempts from deep.
