#10 Southern Arkansas Wins GAC Series against Southwestern Oklahoma

Muleriders top SWOSU 8-6 in resumed action from Friday’s seven-inning game; fall 5-2 in series finale

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – No. 10 Southern Arkansas earned a Great American Conference series win over Southwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday as the Muleriders defeated the host Bulldogs 8-6 in resumed action from Friday's seven-inning game to claim the series. SWOSU salvaged the weekend with a 5-2 victory in the series finale.

Action picked up in game two, which was halted due to darkness on Friday, in the bottom of the sixth inning with SAU ahead 8-5. The Bulldogs pushed across a run on a balk in the seventh, but would be unable to push across any more runs against SAU reliever Matt Kortendick who earned the save. Sophomore Parker Abrego improved to 2-0 on the season as he worked around four earned runs and eight hits on Friday.

In the series finale, the Muleriders took a 2-0 lead through two innings as senior Austin Baker scored on a throwing error in the first inning and classmate Josh Walker hit a solo shot out to left field in the second frame. SWOSU took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning off of SAU reliever Maddux Solomon. The Bulldogs cushioned the lead with an RBI single in the seventh inning, while a sacrifice fly in the eighth put Southwestern Oklahoma up 5-2.

Baker, Walker and junior Kobe Morris accounted for all nine SAU hits in the loss as each player recorded three with Walker's aforementioned solo blast the lone extra base hit. Junior Jack Liddell got the start for SAU and went 2.2 innings with two strikeouts and just one walk. Sophomore Jacob Womack worked the fifth, sixth and seventh innings allowing two runs and Kortendick pitched the final two frames.

Southern Arkansas hits the road for Russellville next weekend as Arkansas Tech awaits in a three-game GAC series. First-pitch in the opener is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, March 5. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start. Live coverage links will be made available at www.MuleriderAthletics.com.
