#25 Muleriders Split Doubleheader with Northwestern Oklahoma on Saturday

Southern Arkansas takes resumed series opener 8-1, falls 2-1 in seven-inning game

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – #25 Southern Arkansas and Northwestern Oklahoma State split its Great American Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon from Walker Stadium at Goodheart Field. The Muleriders (14-3, 5-3 GAC) took the resumed series opener 8-1, while the Rangers (7-11, 4-4 GAC) claimed a 2-1 win in the seven-inning affair. SAU and NWOSU will decide a series winner on Sunday with a single nine-inning game set for noon. Live coverage links are available at www.MuleriderAthletics.com.

In the opener, senior Zach Smith tossed eight innings of five-hit baseball with one run and one walk and picked up nine strikeouts to improve to 5-0 on the season. Junior Jack Liddell pitched the final inning as he faced the minimum by inducing a pair of fly outs and a groundout.

Offensively, a Brett McGee solo homer in the home-half of the fourth inning opened scoring as well as a plentiful run-producing frame as the Muleriders pushed across five more runs following the sophomore's blast. The sixth and final run of the fourth was the only one of the five after McGee's home run that crossed via hit as senior Mason Peterson batted in junior Jacob Martinez. An RBI-walk to Kobe Morris scored junior Cooper King, an RBI hit-by-pitch to junior Jacob Martinez plated sophomore Riley Orr and a wild pitch accounted for Austin Baker crossing home in the inning.

In the eighth, Martinez went deep out to left field to make it 8-1 Southern Arkansas and give the Muleriders their ninth game this season with seven or more runs scored.

In the seven-inning game, one with multiple bang-bang calls, the Muleriders' lone run came on McGee's second home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh following a close call at first that erased sophomore Ty Manning who would have been the tying run. SAU managed to put the tying run at second base with just one out, but NWOSU's Kaleb Honea retired the final two Muleriders with punch outs to even the series.

Sophomore Parker Abrego went 5.1 innings and allowed just two hits and a run. Classmate Remy Bilodeau worked out of the sixth inning and senior Matt Kortendick pitched the final inning.

Baker recorded four hits on the day and added three more stolen bases to his bag-swiping ledger (13-for-13), while McGee registered three hits with the aforementioned home runs giving him seven for the season. Martinez led the team with three RBI.
