(RV) Mulerider Women Top Northeastern State for Key In-Region Win

Southern Arkansas finishes weekend with win after suffering tight 4-1 loss to #19 Southwest Baptist on Saturday

| Box Score 2 MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas Women's Tennis team posted a 1-1 record over the weekend which saw the squad fall 4-1 in a tightly-contested match against #19 Southwest Baptist on Saturday in Tulsa, before bouncing back with a key in-region victory over Northeastern State in Tahlequah on Sunday. NSU is currently the No. 8 ranked team in the Central Region. The Muleriders, who are receiving votes in the latest ITA Division II Women's Top 25, move to 3-1 on the season.
 
In Sunday's win, freshmen Kalley Smith and Anaelle Lepinay opened scoring at doubles #3 with a 6-0 win over NSU's Chiara Carnelutti and Emma Warnock, but the Riverhawks claimed a win at #2 and then at #1 to take the first point.
 
Joanna Nowakowska, the No. 39 ranked player in Division II, battled the nation's No. 3 in Tatjana Stoll to three sets, before falling 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Central Region No. 11 Angela Vargas posted the Muleriders' first point with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Betka Gombarova at #2. Wins by freshman Sarah Roy at #3 (6-2, 2-6, 6-2 vs. Kristela Vidnere) and sophomore Lena Milosevic at #4 (6-4, 6-2 vs. Vera Carvalho) helped Southern Arkansas tie the match at 3-3, before sophomore Simone Simas defeated Chloe Certain 6-4, 7-5 at #6 to clinch the match.
 
The victory over the Riverhawks is the second-consecutive for SAU after the Muleriders topped #17 NSU 4-3 on March 4 of last season.
 
In Saturday's match with the nationally-ranked Bearcats, who were once Central Region foes as members of the MIAA, Southern Arkansas dropped the doubles point at lines #1 and #2, but saw Milosevic win at #4 singles with a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Diana Cabrera; the No. 20 ranked player in the Midwest Region.
 
Nowakowska dropped a close three-set match (6-2, 3-6, 4-6) to Dona Abohabaga, while Roy fell in straight sets (4-6, 4-6) to the Midwest Region No. 12 Constanca Crespo. At #1, Vargas battled No. 30 Jill Van den Dungen, the Midwest Region's No. 4 ranked player, but fell 6-1, 6-4.
 
Southern Arkansas is back in action March 10 in Magnolia as the Mulerider Women host #22 Northwest Missouri State in a Central Region match. First-serve is set for 2 p.m.
