Bentonville, Ark. -Â The SAU Softball team take part in this weekend's Great American Conference Tournament and enter as the top overall seed after winning the regular season championship by a half-game over Arkansas Tech.
The Muleriders will face off against eight seed Ouachita Baptist in the opening round. This is the first time these two teams will meet in Bentonville, with the Muleriders winning nine of the last ten and sweeping their regular season series, only allowing one run to the Tigers. A win over the Tigers would see the Muleriders face the winner of the four-five matchup between Southeastern Oklahoma State and East Central. The Muleriders swept the season series over both teams, as well as being 2-1 against East Central in Bentonville and 3-1 against Southeastern Oklahoma State. The winner of that matchup will face the last team standing from Arkansas Tech vs. Southwestern Oklahoma and Harding vs. Southern Nazarene. The Muleriders lost three of four to the Bulldogs and were swept by the Golden Suns earlier this season.
The Muleriders are 1-0 versus the Bulldogs and the Golden Suns in Bentonville. Â On the other side, the Muleriders swept Southern Nazarene and Harding and are 1-2 against the Crimson Storm in Bentonville, with both losses coming in last year's GAC tournament, and 3-4 against the Bisons. The Muleriders are the only team to have won the GAC Tournament on more than one occasion, winning back in 2014 and 2016. This is the second year in a row the Muleriders have won the GAC regular season championship, winning last year with a 38-6 conference record. The winner of the GAC Tournament will recieve an automatic bid into the Central Regional Tournament, which currently has the Muleriders and Golden Suns in it at fifth and fourth, respectively.Â
The NCAA Selection Show will take place on Monday, May 6th at 9 a.m.
