INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The NCAA Division II Men's Tennis National Committee announced on Wednesday afternoon the tournament seeding for the 16 teams that will compete in Altamonte Springs, Florida for the DII National Championship on May 21-24. Sitting near the top line of the bracket and preparing for an opening round clash with top seed and ITA No. 2 Barry is the Southern Arkansas Men's Tennis team. Match time is set for 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21 from Sanlando Park.
The Muleriders (20-5 OVR, 20-4 DII) are in the midst of an extraordinary campaign which stands as the program's first season of action since 1992-93 when Southern Arkansas was a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). In year one, under first-year head coach and league coach of the year
Greg Owen, Southern Arkansas claimed the Great American Conference Regular Season Championship with an unblemished 4-0 record in addition to winning the Central Region II Preliminary Round title with a 4-1 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State to advance to the national tournament.
Led by four All-GAC selections, including unanimous first-team selection, 2019 ITA Central Region Player to Watch and ITA No. 44
Stuart Rehfuss, the Muleriders have quickly become one of the top teams in the region and will look to make their mark on the national landscape. The SAU Men's berth in the DII National Championship marks just the third time that Southern Arkansas has sent an athletic team to a national tournament since becoming a charter member of the GAC in 2011-12. The first two occurrences were World Series appearances by the SAU Softball team in 2016 and 2018.
A tough challenge awaits the SAU Men in Florida as Barry, the Sunshine State Conference Regular Season and Tournament Champions, enter the national tournament unbeaten in Division II play this season. The Buccaneers (22-1 OVR, DII 22-0) are back-to-back Division II National Runner-Up with a combined 51-5 record in 2017 and 2018. Undoubtedly a storied tennis program, Barry claimed the 2010, 2013 and 2015 NCAA Division II National Titles in addition to placing as National Runner-Up in 1998, 1999, 2008, 2009, and 2011.
Additionally, the Buccaneers boast six players that are ranked in the ITA Division II Men's Individual Top 75 highlighted by No. 7 Pierre Montrieul.
