Magnolia, Ark. – The SAU Baseball team went to extra innings for the first time this season in their midweek clash against Mississippi College, a team they beat back on February 26
th in Clinton, Mississippi.
After committing an error in the ninth inning to allow the visitors to tie the game in the ninth inning,
Austin Baker stepped up with no outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 13
th inning. The second baseman delivered a single through the right side to score pinch runner
Seth Hudgins and win the ballgame for the Muleriders.
The junior went 3-8 on the day from the leadoff spot, and delivered his only RBI of the game at the most opportune time for the Muleriders.
The Muleriders jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening frame, with
Jansen McCurdy swiping third base before scoring on a throwing error by the Choctaws' catcher.
Zach Muldoon hit his third home run in nine games later in the inning, a two-run shot that also scored
Cooper King.
Dakota Wright followed with his team-leading seventh home run of the season to make it four runs.
The Choctaws put a run on the board in the fifth inning, and Muldoon responded in the bottom half of the inning with a RBI single to score King to restore the four-run advantage.
The Choctaws added another run in the sixth inning and two more in the eighth inning to pull within a run; King pushed across a run to double the Mulerider advantage heading into the ninth inning.
Baker committed his fourth error of the season at the worst time, allowing two Choctaws to score to tie the game, and after three scoreless frames, he redeemed himself with the walk-off single.
In addition to Baker, shortstop
Roberto Diaz also collected three hits on the day.
Remy Bilodeau got the start for the Muleriders, going seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out four and only allowing one free pass.
Ryan Williams came on in relief and only lasted 0.2 innings, allowing a two-run home run to cut the Choctaw deficit to a single run.
Closer
Matt Kortendick pitched the final 5.1 innings, allowing three hits and no earned runs as his record improves to 4-2 on the season.
The Muleriders now stand at 25-15 on the season. They are back in action this Friday and Saturday as they host Ouachita in a three-game conference series.
