ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Sophomore combo
Jalen Brooks registered a career-high 22 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the floor which included four three-point makes and he added a 6-of-7 effort from the charity stripe to lead all scorers, but Southern Arkansas suffered a one-point defeat on the road at Ouachita as the Tigers claimed the Great American Conference affair 68-67 on Saturday afternoon from inside Bill Vining Arena.
The Muleriders (3-5, 1-2 GAC) trailed 35-34 at the half and matched Ouachita's 33 second half points in a game that featured five tied scores and five lead changes. SAU shot 18-of-54 (33.3%) from the floor on Saturday and made eight of their 25 attempts from beyond the arc. The Muleriders finished 23-of-29 from the line; a season-best for the squad when they register at least 25 attempts. Southern Arkansas led by twelve points at 26-14 12 minutes into the ballgame, but Ouachita engineered a 21-8 run over the final eight minutes of the half to take a one-point lead into the intermission.
SAU would battle back in the second half to tie the game at 48 with 14:47 to play, but the Tigers would build a twelve-point lead through the under-8 media timeout before holding off the Muleriders late.
The Muleriders return to action next Saturday as they host Arkansas Tech in a Great American Conference game set for a 3 p.m. tip-off from inside the W.T. Watson Center. Live coverage links are available at www.MuleriderAthletics.com.
