Lady Muleriders splits final day slug fest with Crimson Storm; wins GAC road series over SNU, 3-1

BETHANY, Okla. – The No. 7-ranked Southern Arkansas softball team split the final series doubleheader with Southern Nazarene on Saturday afternoon after dropping game two by a score of 15-8 that saw both teams combine for 27 hits and eight pitching changes in the contest. SAU won the first game of the doubleheader, 5-1, to take the GAC series over the Crimson Storm, 3-1.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS & HAPPENINGS
  • The Lady Muleriders benefited from the long ball in game one as they scored all five of their runs on deliveries that left the yard.
  • Senior slugger Brooke Goad was responsible for the first run to cross the plate as she connected with her 12th dinger of the season on a solo shot to right field that put SAU on the board in the top of the first inning, 1-0.
  • Starting pitcher for SAU, Victoria Taylor, cruised through the following two innings as she struck out five of the next seven hitters she faced in the Southern Nazarene lineup to help defend the Lady Mulerider's slim advantage.
  • SAU would add some insurance runs in the fourth inning after sophomore Faith Otts blasted her sixth homer on the year in the form of a 3-run jack out to left field that pushed the Lady Muleriders to a 4-0 edge over the Crimson Storm.
  • In the bottom of that frame, Southern Nazarene's leading hitter Riley Brown scratched the first, and only, run for the Crimson Storm after leaving the yard with two outs to make it a 4-1 score in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Goad lead-off the sixth inning with her second homerun of the contest as she sent a laser over the center field wall to cushion SAU's lead, 5-1.
  • Taylor stayed locked-in on the bump retiring six of the next seven batters she faced in the final two innings of action to wrap up the victory for SAU.

IN THE CIRCLE
  • Victoria Taylor pitched a complete game for SAU allowing just one run on three hits to clinch her seventh win in the circle this season.
  • Complimenting her dominant output in the circle, Taylor recorded her second-most strikeouts on the season with eight in the seven inning affair.
 
AT THE PLATE
  • Of SAU's seven total hits in the contest, three went the homerun distance and accounted for all five of the runs scored for the Lady Muleriders in the contest.
  • Otts and Goad were the sluggers for SAU in the game as the duo combined for five RBIs led by Otts' 3-RBI jack in the fourth inning.
  • Goad's two dingers in the game places her at 13-total on the year in 22 games.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS & HAPPENINGS
  • Both SAU and SNU opened up the slug fest with a combined eight runs on seven hits that led to a 4-all tie after the first inning.
  • The Lady Muleriders would jump back on top in the next inning after Marina Duran roped a base-clearing 3-RBI single down the right field line that prompted a 7-4 lead in the top of the second.
  • The Crimson Storm answered in the bottom of that frame and took the lead after scoring five runs on five hits and a pair of infield errors that led to a 9-7 score at the end of the second inning.
  • In the top of the fourth, senior Megan Godoyo would reach base for the third-straight time in the contest after she knocked an RBI-single into left field that brought SAU within one, 9-8, but the Crimson Storm would cushion its lead in the bottom of that frame on a pair of solo homeruns to extend the lead out to 11-8.
  • The Lady Muleriders struggled to keep pace with the Southern Nazarene offense as the Crimson Storm added more runs in the final two innings of action to continue to pull away from SAU and prompted a 15-8 final decision in the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
  • The contest saw eight different pitchers in the circle between both teams with six of those appearing in the first three innings.
  • Katelyn Brown registered the win in the circle for SNU as she pitched through six innings and scattered seven hits while allowing just two runs and struck out four.
  • Brooke Ford-Nelson suffered the loss in the circle for SAU after giving up four runs on three hits in one and a third innings pitched.

AT THE PLATE
  • Eight Lady Muleriders recorded hits in the game as the team combined for 15-total hits led by Miller, Otts, and Godoyo who tallied three hits apiece and combined for three RBIs.
  • Duran's 4 RBIs in the game led SAU and gave her ten-total in the weekend series against SNU.

UP NEXT 
The Lady Mulerider softball team is set to play in its first home games of the season in Magnolia as they welcome in Texas A&M- Kingsville with a doubleheader scheduled for a 1 p.m. first-pitch at Dawson Field.
