Box Score TEXARKANA, Ark. – A furious second half rally that saw Southern Arkansas outscore Missouri Western 25-10 in the final two quarters was not enough to erase a 20-0 halftime deficit as the Griffons, representatives of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, held off the Muleriders in a 35-20 win at the Sixth-Annual Agent Barry Live United Bowl from Texarkana, Arkansas' Razorback Stadium on a rather warm Saturday afternoon.
The Muleriders (8-4) struggled to maintain drives in the opening half of play as the team relied on a handful of sporadic big plays offensively. The Griffons scored 10 points in both the first and second quarters courtesy of rushing touchdowns of 23 and 3 yards by MWSU's James Bailey Jr. and a pair of field goals from 2018 LUT Bowl MVP Tyler Basch. Basch finished with a dozen points which included three extra points and a trio of field goals including a 58-yarder right before the intermission that gave the Griffons a 20-0 halftime advantage.
SAU's
Jared Lancaster hauled in ten passes for 129 yards and a touchdown and also ran in the Muleriders' first six points of the game in the third quarter. The Bossier City, Louisiana, native was a huge offensive catalyst for Southern Arkansas in the team's second half comeback attempt.
Lancaster added another touchdown with a reception from
Barrett Renner on a nine-yard pass and after Basch hit his third field goal to put Missouri Western up 30-19 with 5:58 to play.
The Muleriders pulled out all the stops for what would be their final score as three flips behind the line scrimmage put the ball back in Renner's hands who found
Jaidon Parrish from 19 yards out to pull SAU to within 30-25 with 1:48 to play.
The onside kick attempt failed but SAU had a chance late, but was unable to find a touchdown.
