WEATHERFORD, Okla. – A big first quarter from Southwestern Oklahoma set the tone early on in Saturday afternoon's Great American Conference affair inside the Pioneer Cellular Event Center as Southern Arkansas was unable to overcome the deficit falling to the nationally-ranked and league-leading Lady Bulldogs, 98-60.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A layup by Brette Wacha just over two and a half minutes into the contest and a pair of free throws from Kimberly Crown with 6:06 remaining in the first quarter marked the only tied scores of Saturday afternoon's contest.
- Southwestern Oklahoma, ranked 17th in the nation, engineered a 19-2 run to close out the first quarter and distanced themselves from the Lady Muleriders. SWOSU's lead would stand at 26 heading into the intermission.
- After the big first quarter by the Lady Bulldogs, SAU would never allow SWOSU to produce a run of more than five points for the next 16 minutes of action, before Southwestern Oklahoma closed the third quarter on a 10-3 run to carry a 72-37 lead into the final ten minutes.
- A 6-0 run from Southern Arkansas highlighted the fourth quarter for the Lady Muleriders as Olivia McWilliams and Sue Key each converted a pair of free throws, before the former knocked down her final basket of the game on a midrange jumper with 6:34 remaining in the fourth quarter.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- McWilliams led Southern Arkansas with 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting and added five rebounds, five steals and an assist. McWilliams was also 5-of-6 from the free throw line, accounting for almost half of SAU's trips to the charity stripe on Saturday. The Lady Muleriders shot a collective 85.7% from the line, but only manufactured 14 attempts.
- Key followed with 16 points and three steals and Crown chipped in with a dozen points and six rebounds. Wacha grabbed a team-high eight boards and finished with two blocks and an assist.
- Southwestern Oklahoma was led by Hailey Tucker and Hayden Priddy as each player went for 20 points, while Tyra Aska followed with 15 points as the Lady Bulldogs shot 51.4% from the floor, including 14-of-28 from three-point range.
- SWOSU outrebounded Southern Arkansas 53 to 32 and outscored the Lady Muleriders in the paint 44-18.
- SAU collected ten steals and turned the basketball over just nine times, while forcing 13 turnovers against the #17-ranked Lady Bulldogs.
