MAGNOLIA, Ark. – A dominant offensive onslaught by the Southern Arkansas football team carried the Muleriders to a 56-27 rout victory over Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday evening at Wilkins Stadium at Rip Powell Field.
RECORDS
Oklahoma Baptist Bison (0-5, 0-5 GAC)
Southern Arkansas Muleriders (3-2, 3-2 GAC)
OF NOTE
- In the offense outburst, the Muleriders gained over 700 yards of total offense for just the third time in program history as they piled up 718 yards against Oklahoma Baptist. That total fell just nine yards shy of tying the single-game record set back in 2012 against Arkansas Tech. The other 700+ yards of total offense came in 2000 against Henderson State.
- The Muleriders did set a new single-game record, however, as they achieved 36 First Downs, breaking the previous mark of 35 against Howard Payne in 1993. Of the 36 first downs, 19 came through the air, 16 on the ground, and one via a penalty.
- Senior wide receiver Jonathan Weisheit and junior quarterback Barrett Renner established career records with Weisheit now laying claim to the all-time receptions record and Renner becoming the all-time leader in pass completions.
- Weisheit surpassed former SAU All-America wide out and current Canadian Football League (CFL) player Nik Lewis as Lewis' previous school record was 162 receptions. Weisheit now has 165 after hauling in seven on Saturday.
- Earlier this season, Lewis set the All-Time CFL Reception Record and to-date has 1,048 professional grabs north of the boarder.
- Renner, in just two and a half seasons under center for the Muleriders now has his first career record as he now sits atop the career list for pass completions. Needing 28 to tie the all-time record, Renner completed 32 against the Bison, tossing himself past now previous record-holder, Tyler Sykora, who completed 658 passes in his time as a Mulerider. Renner's total stands at 662.
- Renner also threw for over 400 yards for the second time in his career as he had 405 yards through the air; four shy of his career-best. Additionally, Renner tied a SAU single-game record for touchdown passes as he had six against the Bison
- All six of Renner's TD passes went to a different receiver
- Of the 718 yards of total offense, 313 came on the ground. It was the most yards rushing for the Muleriders since they rolled up 304 against Northwestern Oklahoma in 2015. Conversely, the Mulerider defense allowed just 11 net rushing yards against the Bison. It was the fewest net rushing yards given up since that same game against NWOSU in '15 when the Muleriders held the Rangers to a staggering -26 yards rushing.
