Lady Muleriders looking to build off of weekend’s momentum; host Ouachita in league affair

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas Lady Mulerider Volleyball team took advantage of their opportunity to play inside the W.T. Watson Center this past weekend as they collected three wins and in the process snapped a five-match losing skid while hosting the Dr. Margaret Downing Invitational. The Lady Muleriders welcome in Ouachita for the first of eight straight Great American Conference matches. First-serve in Magnolia is scheduled for 6 p.m.
 
OF NOTE
  • SAU (6-9, 0-1 GAC) enters on a 3-game winning streak after toppling Grambling State, Texas A&M International and Mississippi College last weekend at the Dr. Margaret Downing Invitational.
  • Ouachita (8-4, 1-0 GAC) comes to Magnolia on a three-game losing skid and is currently 2-4 after a 6-0 start to the season.
  • The Lady Muleriders are currently 11th in the Great American Conference standings, while Ouachita sits in third-place.
  • Tuesday night marks the halfway point of the season for Southern Arkansas. At 6-9 overall, the Lady Muleriders are two games better this season through 15 games after a 4-11 start in 2016.
  • OUA has won two-straight over Southern Arkansas since the two joined the GAC in 2011 and since that time, the Lady Tigers have won 7 of the 12 meetings.
 
WHO TO WATCH
  • Senior outside hitter Alexia Southern, after 46 kills in four matches last week, has jumped to the top of the category and leads Southern Arkansas with 114 kills at 2.33 kills per set. Sophomore Seven Powers joins Southern as the only other Lady Mulerider with 100 kills with 101 at 2.06 kills per set.
  • Sophomore setter Alexa Bass paces the team with 314 assists at 6.16 per set, which currently stands as the ninth-best mark in the league, while senior Savannah Pillow adds 3.37 assists per set.
  • Senior middle hitter Alli O'Banion leads a much improved Southern Arkansas team on the defensive front line from a year ago as she has registered a team-leading 43.0 total blocks at 0.83 per set, which is tied for the ninth-best mark in the GAC. Six other Lady Muleriders have recorded ten or more total blocks with freshman Bailey Cagle having the second-most with 37.0 at 0.74 per set.
  • Sophomore defensive specialist Whitney Brown leads a back court resistance as she has registered 131 digs at 2.85 digs per set. Bass and Southern trail Brown in digs with 99 and 90 digs respectively.
  • The Lady Tigers' team attack percentage of .213 is the fourth-highest mark in the conference, while their opponent attack percentage of .187 is the fifth-highest in the GAC.
  • Adrianna Nolly's .333 attack percentage is sixth-best in the league and her 3.03 kills per set ranks fifth.
  • Stormi Leonard facilitates the Ouachita attack and has done so by recording the third-most assists per set at 10.00 in 44 sets played.
  • Defensively, Nikki Clay ranks ninth in digs with 4.27 per set.
