MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Lady Mulerider Volleyball team closed out the Inaugural Dr. Margaret Downing Invitational in fashion as they defeated Mississippi College, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon to pick up their third straight win.
The Lady Muleriders (6-9) produced their third-best attack percentage of the season (.254) and defended a Choctaw attack that produced a swing clip of just .099 in the match. SAU produced their second-highest kill performance of the season after totaling 52 kills in the four-set contest. Of those kills,
Alexia Southern accounted for 14, her second-highest of the season to bring her 3-match tournament total to 37.
SAU was able to withstand a late Choctaw run to hold onto a 25-21 set one win. The Lady Mulerider's only loss of the match came in the second set after a 17-all tie turned in the Choctaw's favor with a 25-22 win. SAU's offense peaked in set three with a .476 attack percentage that helped maintain a clear scoring advantage throughout the set leading to an eventual 25-9 win. The fourth set was all the Lady Muleriders would need to secure the match win in a 25-20 final decision aided by 15 kills.
The Lady Muleriders carry the momentum from a three-game winning streak into next week as they host Ouachita Baptist in a GAC Conference-opener at 6 p.m. on Tuesday inside the W.T. Watson Center.
