SETTING THE SCENE | Back-To-Back at Home
The Southern Arkansas football team will be looking to build off of their first win
of the season as the Muleriders convincingly beat reigning GAC Champion, Harding,
35-24 last week. The win came on SAU's home-opener of the 2017 season, and
thanks to it also being Family Day on campus, an over-flow crowd of 6,735 were in
attendance to see it.
This week, the Muleriders (1-1, 1-1 GAC) will remain at home and play their
second-consecutive game at Wilkins Stadium at Rip Powell Field. That will be an
advantage for the Muleriders as they have made their home venue one of the most
difficult places to play for opponents. Heading into the season, SAU was 19-3 at
home since the start of the 2012 season and with their win against Harding, that
mark has improved to 20-3.
SAU's opponent will be Southwestern Oklahoma and the Bulldogs (1-1, 1-1 GAC)
will be looking to bounce back from a loss their last time out as they dropped their
home-opener to Ouachita, 38-10.
About Southwestern Oklahoma
SCHEDULE
The Southwestern Oklahoma Bulldog football team enters play 1-1 on the season and are coming off
of a 38-10 loss at home against Ouachita. In Week One, SWOSU went on the road and came away with a
hard-fought 20-19 win over Arkansas-Monticello. In order to preserve the win, the Bulldogs blocked a
32-yard field goal attempt by UAM in the waning seconds of the game. Meeting up with the Muleriders
in Week 3 is a change of pace as the two teams opened each other's seasons the previous two years.
THE COACH
The Bulldogs are coached by Dan Cocannouer, who is into his ninth season with SWOSU. In his
eight previous years, Cocannouer has amassed a 34-53 overall record. Last year, Cocannouer's
Bulldogs went 5-6 and finished seventh in the GAC. The year prior, however, Cocannouer had his best
season on the sidelines for SWOSU as he led the Bulldogs to an 8-4 record and an appearance in the
2015 Live United Bowl in Texarkana.
SCOUTING THE OFFENSE
Offensively, the Bulldogs are averaging 15.0 points per game and 389.5 yards of total offense per
game. Fairly balanced early on in their attack, 217.0 of those yards per game is coming through the
air while the remaining 172.5 yards are being gained on the ground. In the GAC, the Bulldogs rank 7th in
Total Offense, 8th in Passing Offense, 9th in Rushing Offense, and 12th in Scoring Offense.
The primary signal-caller for Bulldogs is Casey Freeman and the redshirt sophomore has completed
35-of-64 passes for 401 yards and 1 TD while throwing a pair of INTs.
In terms of rushing, the Bulldogs are led by Karltrell Henderson, who has 183 yards on 34 carries.
Sheldon Wilson and Cedric Cooper have been the two backs to find the end zone as each have one
apiece.
Among the receivers, Dillon Bauer has the most yards with 85, but Dylan Power and Jared
Rayburn have the most catches with seven each. Zach Hill and Jordan Jackson account for the two
receiving touchdowns for the Bulldogs.
SCOUTING THE DEFENSE
Defensively, the Bulldogs are allowing 28.5 points per game and 373.0 yards of total offense per
game. A majority of those yards are coming on the ground with an average of 199.0 yards per game,
while the remaining 174.0 yards per game are coming through the air. Among the GAC rankings, the
Bulldogs rank 4th Passing Defense, 6th in Total Defense, 7th in Scoring Defense, and 8th in rushing
defense.
On the year, the Bulldogs have forced five turnovers with all being fumble recoveries. Additionally,
the recoveries have come by five different players. The leading tackler for the Bulldogs is Antoine
Albert with 14. TJ Harris and Bailey McKay lead the team in sacks with 1.0 each.
THE SERIES
This will be the just seventh meeting all-time between Southern Arkansas and Southwestern
Oklahoma as the two teams first began playing each other in 2011 as conference opponents in the
newly-formed Great American Conference. The overall series has been razor-thin close with the combined
margin of victory being 24 points. The largest margin of victory in that time was just nine points
as SAU beat SWOSU 31-22 in the initial meeting in 2011. In 2014, SWOSU picked up their first victory in
the series with a 27-24 win at home. Overall, the Muleriders hold a 5-1 advantage in the all-time series
and are 3-0 in Magnolia.
