SAU Baseball falls in regional opener to No. 4-seed Lindenwood, 14-7

set to play loser of No. 8 UAM and No. 1 Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan. – An early offensive surge by No. 4-seed Lindenwood was too much for the No. 5-seed Southern Arkansas baseball team to overcome as the Muleriders fell in their opening game of the 2017 Central Region Tournament to Lindenwood by a score of 14-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lindenwood's offense got off to a quick start with four hits in the bottom of the first inning, but the Muleriders' starter Kenneth Tabor was able to minimize damage in that frame to just one run. Helping Tabor limit the Lions to that one run was a pair of pickoffs as he picked off a runner at first, while his battery mate, Cory Gallegos, picked off a Lion at second.
  • In the second inning, however, the Lions collected four more hits, and this time were able to plate three runs as Lindenwood jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Another three-run inning followed in the third and it was 7-0, Lindenwood through three innings of play.
  • In the fourth, SAU got on the board and cut into the Lions' lead with a three-run inning of their own. Recently named Central Player of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA) and the D2 Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA), Trevor Rucker got the inning started with a single to right-center field. A batter later, Rucker scored as Jacob Richardson doubled down the left field line. Two batters after that, James Trevanion hit the first of his two home runs in the game to give SAU their second and third runs of the inning.
  • The Lions answered back with a two-run homer of their own in the bottom half, however, to make it 9-3, Lindenwood.
  • After the Muleriders were retired in short order in the top of the fifth, the Lions separated themselves some more as they scored five runs on six hits in the bottom of the inning to take a 14-3 lead.
  • The Muleriders would then score the game's final four runs, all via the solo home run. Cortland McPherson hit the first long ball of that streak in the sixth, while Trevanion hit his second homer in the eighth. Michael Page and Blake Hall went back-to-back in the ninth to pull the score to its final of 14-7.

ON THE MOUND
  • The Muleriders were forced to use three pitchers against Lindenwood as the Lions' bats put together a 14-run, 19-hit attack.
  • Kenneth Tabor was the starter for the Muleriders and pitched the first 2.1 innings before giving way to George Eubanks. Eubanks had the next 1.2 innings and Eric Schildt handled the final four innings of the game.

AT THE PLATE
  • The Muleriders registered 11 hits as a team with six going for extra bases. Five of those left the yard for home runs with James Trevanion accounting for a pair of long balls. Trevanion, who drove in three, was also one of two Muleriders with multiple hits in the game as he went 2-for-4. Sam Mrstik was the other Mulerider with a multi-hit game as he was also 2-for-4
  • Blake Hall, Cortland McPherson and Michael Page also homered in the game with Page and Hall going back-to-back in the ninth.
