No. 6 Muleriders stave off late-inning rallied by Henderson State and sweep three-game series

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The No. 6-ranked Southern Arkansas baseball team took both ends of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader against Henderson State to complete a three-game sweep of the Reddies, but in each game, Henderson put together threatening rallies that the Muleriders were forced to stave off in order to secure the two wins in front of a great crowd at Walker Stadium at Goodheart Field.

TEAM RECORDS
Henderson State Reddies (20-16, 13-11 GAC)
#6 Southern Arkansas Muleriders (29-7, 22-2 GAC)

PITCHING DECISIONS – Game 1
W – Dalton Algiene (9-1)
L – Chris Hunt (5-4)
S – Makenzy Larsen (4)

HOW IT HAPPENED – Game 1
  • Henderson State staked themselves to a 2-0 lead as Jordan Taylor hit a two-run homerun in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the second, SAU answered with two runs of their own to tie the game at two-all.
  • In that inning, Cory Gallegos doubled home James Trevanion and later scored on a bunt single by Josey Langston.
  • Two innings after tying the game, the Muleriders took a 5-2 lead as they plated three runs in the frame. The first of those runs scored on a RBI triple by Gallegos. A batter later, Langston drove in Gallegos once more, this time on a single to left field. Four batters later, Mark Fontenot drew a bases loaded walk to force home Langston.
  • That score held until the bottom of the eighth when the Muleriders added two runs of insurance to take a 7-2 lead. The runs in the eighth scored on RBI singles by Trevor Rucker and Jacob Richardson.
  • Those two added runs in the eighth proved to be very much needed for the Muleriders as the Reddies mounted a furious ninth-inning rally, scoring four runs in the inning to pull to within a run. The threat fell short, however, as the Muleriders held off the Reddies for the 7-6 win.

ON THE MOUND – Game 1
  • Dalton Algiene got the start in game one on Saturday and fell behind in the game on the two-run homerun by Jordan Taylor in the top of the first, but after that inning, Algiene settled in to the start en route to picking up his ninth win of the season.
  • In 7.0 innings of work, Algiene allowed just those two earned runs and struck out 11 Reddies. It was the third time this season that Algiene has registered double-digit strikeouts.
  • Eric Schildt came on in relief in the eighth and pitched a 1-2-3 inning and returned for the ninth, but was only able to register one out before Makenzy Larsen was called upon to get the final two outs.
  • Larsen did just that and nailed down his fourth save of the season.

AT THE PLATE – Game 1
  • Offensively, the Muleriders banged out 11 hits with eight of the nine starters registering a hit.
  • James Trevanion, Cory Gallegos and Josey Langston all had multi-hit games as each were 2-for-3.
  • Both of Gallegos' hits went for extra bases as he doubled and tripled. Gallegos also helped pace the team in RBIs with two while also scoring twice.
  • Langston matched that output in RBIs with two himself and Trevanion matched Gallegos in runs scored with two.
  • Junior third baseman Jacob Richardson was 1-for-5 in the game with that hit coming on an infield hit in his last at-bat in the bottom of the eighth. That hit was significant because it extended his hitting streak to 27 games, which tied a Great American Conference record.

PITCHING DECISIONS – Game 2
W – Kenneth Tabor (7-1)
L – Bryant Haralson (5-3)
S – Makenzy Larsen (5)

HOW IT HAPPENED – Game 2
  • In game two, SAU got their offense off to a quick start, scoring three times in the bottom of the first. The first run came home on a RBI double by Mark Fontenot while the other two runs came via a two-run homerun off the bat of Cortland McPherson.
  • Two innings later, it was 7-0 SAU as the Muleriders struck for four runs in the bottom of the third. The first two of those runs scored a two-run homerun by Jacob Richardson and the other two scored on a two-RBI triple by Josey Langston.
  • In the fifth, Henderson started to mount their comeback effort as they scored twice in the frame to make it 7-2.
  • The threat didn't really heat up until the top of the seventh as the Reddies loaded the bases with no outs. After a wild pitch scored a run to make it 7-3, the Muleriders got a big foul out for the first out of the inning.
  • The Reddies' Parker Jones then singled into centerfield, however, to chase home the fourth run of the game for Henderson while also bringing the tying run to the plate. A walk followed in the next at-bat and the bases were loaded once more, this time with one out and the potential go-ahead run at the plate.
  • SAU closer Makenzy Larsen was summoned from the bullpen following the walk and he proceeded to snuff out the Reddie threat as he struck out the next two batters to slam the door shut on the game, securing a 7-4 win for SAU.

ON THE MOUND – Game 2
  • Kenneth Tabor started game two and was brilliant through the first 3.2 innings of his start as he held the Reddies without a hit until Colton Coffman doubled down the right field line.
  • After that, Tabor continued to pitch well as he worked into the final inning in the seventh, but the Reddies mounted a comeback and chased him from the start.
  • Hunter Vasquez was first in relief as he entered with the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh. Vasquez recorded an out, but allowed a run to score on a wild pitch and surrendered a hit and a walk to extend the game, promoting the call to Makenzy Larsen for the final two outs.
  • In his second relief outing of the day, Larsen was dominant as he struck out the two batters he faced to end the game as he secured his fifth save of the season and second of the afternoon.

AT THE PLATE – Game 2
  • The Mulerider offense kept on clicking in game two as they scored seven runs on 10 hits. All of that production was done off of HSU starter Bryant Haralson, who came in to the game with the lowest ERA (1.38) and was tied for the most strikeouts in the GAC (66).
  • The 10 hits and seven earned runs off of Haralson were all season-highs against him. Additionally his three strikeouts in the game were the fewest for him in any start this season.
  • Of the 10 hits off Haralson, six went for extra bases as the Muleriders doubled three times, tripled once and hit a pair of homeruns.
  • Accounting for the extra-base hits were Mark Fontenot (2B [2]), Cory Gallegos (2B), Josey Langston (3B), Jacob Richardson (HR), and Cortland McPherson (HR).
  • The homerun for Richardson set a new GAC hitting streak record as he extended his streak to 28 games. The previous record was a 27-game hitting streak by East Central's Nick Spini.

ON DECK
The Muleriders will now prepare to remain at home for the next four games as they will host Ouachita for a mid-week, non-conference game on Tuesday, April 11 and then Harding for a weekend GAC series beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 14.
