Two-run ninth inning sends No. 16 Muleriders to 8-7 win over Northwestern Oklahoma in series opener

ALVA, Okla. – The No. 16-ranked Southern Arkansas baseball team scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning to break what was a six-all tie at the time. Those two runs proved to be just enough as the Muleriders went on to beat Northwestern Oklahoma, 8-7, in the opening game of the weekend series on Friday evening at Myers Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first inning, the Muleriders struck for three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead. The first two of those runs scored on a two-out, two-RBI double off the bat of Michael Page. Blake Hall then traded places with Page, doubling him home for the third run.
  • The Rangers made it a one-run game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, but a Page sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth made it 4-2, Muleriders.
  • A wild pitch in the bottom of that frame brought the Rangers to within a run once more, 4-3, but as they did an inning ago, the Muleriders plated a run a half inning later to gain a two-run lead once more, 5-3.
  • A big three-run fifth inning for the Rangers was the response as NWOSU flipped the score in their favor, 6-5.
  • In the top of the six, SAU pulled even with the Rangers as Trevor Rucker struck a two-out double to left field, plating Josey Langston, who led the inning off with a walk.
  • Neither team scored in the seventh or eighth innings, but in the ninth, SAU pushed across a pair of runs to take an 8-6 lead.
  • Like in the sixth, that inning was started with a leadoff walk, this one drawn by Jacob Richardson. After a wild pitch and a groundout moved him to third, Richardson scored on a Cortland McPherson single to right-centerfield.
  • McPherson was then pinch-run for by Sam Mrstik and he quickly stole second base. Not long after that steal, Mrstik scored the Muleriders' eighth run as Cory Gallegos singled through the left side.
  • Jacob Stroder, who came on in relief in the fifth inning came back out in the ninth and finished out the game, but the Rangers were able to touch him up slightly with a one-out solo home run which brought the game to its final of 8-7.

ON THE MOUND
  • Connor Wells got the start, but ended up with a no-decision as he did not make it out of the fifth.
  • Jacob Stroder came on in relief in that fifth and pitched the final five innings of the game en route to picking up his third win of the season.
  • All of Stroder's wins this season have come in relief appearances.
  • In his outing, Stroder scattered four hits and allowed two earned runs, but struck out four.

AT THE PLATE
  • The Muleriders totaled 13 hits in the game with nearly half of those going for extra bases as SAU hit six doubles.
  • Two of those doubles came off the bat of Trevor Rucker. Cory Gallegos, Blake Hall, Cortland McPherson and Michael Page each had a two-bagger to account for the other doubles.
  • Three Muleriders had multiple hits in the game with Gallegos and McPherson pacing the team with three hits each. McPherson was 3-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and a RBI. Gallegos was 3-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI.
  • Rucker was the third Mulerider with multiple hits as he was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI.
  • Page was the top run-producer on Friday, driving in three runs.
