MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Lady Mulerider Basketball team had a strong lead late in the third quarter with a double-digit scoring advantage over Delta State up until the last minute of action as the Lady Statesmen cut its 10-point deficit in half at the quarter, 43-38, and then prompted a late scoring rally in the fourth quarter to take the lead with five minutes left in the contest and, eventually, the victory over SAU, 53-49.
The Lady Muleriders benefitted from a perfect percentage at the free throw line (5-of-5) in the first half with Kimberly Crown contributing points on all four of her free throw attempts (4-of-4). SAU outscored their opponent in each of the first three quarters (43-38) to hold the lead at the end of each, but the Lady Mulerider's game-low six-points was not enough in the fourth quarter as Delta State registered 15 points to take the lead and top SAU.
With a slim 3-point lead at the half, Southern Arkansas' offense went off in the third quarter with a 14-4 run to reach its largest scoring advantage in the contest of 13 points (39-26) with 3:23 left to play. In that sequence, Crown and Sue Key served as the catalysts for SAU as they each tallied five points to help the Lady Mulerider's advantage.
The Lady Statesmen scored seven-straight points in the final 1:26 of the third quarter to come within five points shy of SAU, 38-43. In the game's final quarter, Delta State would use back-to-back jumpers to trail SAU by a single point, 44-45, at 7:25, followed with a pair of good free throws by Key that pulled the Lady Muleriders ahead by three, 47-44.
The Lady Statesmen later made a 3-point shot to gain the lead over SAU, 49-47, and Anna Djedjemel kept the Lady Muleriders in the game as she banked a jumper in the paint at 3:21 to knot the game at 49-all, but an offensive foul saw Delta State take the lead, 50-49, on a good free throw made by Raven Johnson and eventually tacked on three more points to take the win at a final decision of 53-49.
