Lady Muleriders topple league rival Arkansas-Monticello, 3-1

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Lady Mulerider Volleyball team recorded their first GAC match victory this season after defeating league-rival Arkansas-Monticello in four sets (28-26, 22-25, 25-18, 25-21) on Thursday night inside the W.T. Watson Center.
 
 
OF NOTE
  • Southern Arkansas recorded a higher attack percentage than Monticello in the match with a .241 attack clip
  • With tonight's victory, SAU snapped a 3-match losing streak against UAM
  • SAU Volleyball's record vs. UAM is now 10-4 since both schools joined the GAC in 2011 
  • With four blocks in the match, Alli O'Banion became the program's All-Time leader in Block Assists in the Rally Scoring Era with 266 total
  • O'Banion is now just 24 kills shy of becoming the fifth Rally Scoring Era player with 1,000 career kills after recording nine in tonight's match with a career 976 total kills.
  • Alexa Bass was just three kills shy of recording her third triple-double of the season with seven kills, 23 assists and 17 digs
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SAU was just one point shy of claiming the first set victory at a 24-19 decision before UAM took the lead on a 6-0 run that made it 25-24, UAM. Bailey Cagle and Bass delivered with a pair of kills that allowed SAU to reclaim the lead, 26-25, before the Cotton Blossoms tied the game at 26-all. A kill later from Cagle put the Lady Muleriders back in the lead and an error on UAM gave SAU the set win at 28-26.
  • Despite losing the second set, SAU bounced back in a major way with a 25-18 victory in the third set to have the match advantage over UAM, 2-1.
  • The Lady Muleriders registered 24 kills in the final two sets at an average attack clip of .290 and defended a UAM attack clip of .186 to claim the match victory.
  • Tied at 9-all in the third set, SAU would make an 8-1 run to take the 17-10 advantage over the Cotton Blossoms. UAM would come as close as a five point deficit to SAU at 15-20, but was ultimately held off by three kills and a service ace from SAU to drop the set, 18-25.
  • In the final set, the Lady Muleriders maintained a steady lead as the Cotton Blossoms tied the contest once at 11-all, but SAU scored the next four points to stay in the lead, 15-11. UAM came within a point of SAU on three separate occasions after that, but five attack errors along with five SAU kills aided a 25-21 victory for SAU.

  • The Lady Muleriders prepare for their final four GAC matches of the season as they travel to Searcy, Arkansas on Tuesday, October 31 for a matchup with second-ranked GAC opponent Harding at 6 p.m.
