Hamilton’s last second putback pushes Lady Muleriders past Arkansas-Monticello, 80-78, in overtime

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Four Lady Muleriders scored in double figures, but sophomore forward Alyssa Hamilton's offensive rebound and last second putback in overtime proved to be the difference on Monday evening inside a raucous W.T. Watson Center as the Lady Muleriders slipped by Arkansas-Monticello, 80-78, on "Rivalry Monday" in the Great American Conference.

RECORDS
Arkansas-Monticello (6-7, 3-6 GAC)
Southern Arkansas (4-9, 2-7 GAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With 6.9 seconds to play in overtime, a contested shot on freshman guard Aaliyah Holmes' drive to the basket did not fall, but Hamilton crashed inside to grab the offensive board and laid her putback off the glass with one second remaining to put Southern Arkansas on top, 80-78.
  • Freshman forward Kimberly Crown's first bucket of 13 fourth-quarter points came thirty-seconds into the final period of regulation and pulled Southern Arkansas to within a point at 50-49. Holmes followed with a successful jumper on the next trip down to give the Lady Muleriders a 51-50 lead with 8:50 to play in the fourth quarter.
  • The Lady Muleriders would grind through almost three scoreless minutes as UAM's lead grew to nine, before Crown scored inside and followed with a successful "and-1" to cut the deficit to six, 60-54 at the 5:53 mark of the fourth quarter.
  • Crown continued to battle around inside and create opportunities to find the charity stripe as she added a pair of free throws and a layup on a quick pass from Hamilton to shorten the UAM lead to five, 63-58, with 3:39 to play.
  • On the ensuing trip down the court, Crown stuffed an inside attempt by the Blossoms and moments later assisted Holmes who knocked down a triple-try with 2:54 remaining in the fourth quarter to pull SAU to within a possession, 63-61. A minute later, Crown tied the game at 63 on a running jumper inside.
  • Arkansas-Monticello would appear to take control of the contest as back-to-back trips to the foul line gave the Blossoms a four-point lead at 67-63 with 1:16 to play in the fourth quarter.
  • But Crown again worked inside, drawing a foul and converting both attempts pulling SAU back to within a bucket at 67-65. Arkansas-Monticello would miss five of their final six free throw attempts in the last :25 of the fourth quarter (the last four would have given UAM the lead), while SAU received a pair of free throws from junior guard Anna Djedjemel and a clutch free throw from senior guard Makaila Jordan to tie the game at 68, forcing overtime as the Blossoms missed a pair of attempts with four seconds left.
  • In the overtime session, Hamilton played heavy as she primarily took over inside in the absence of Crown, who fouled out in the final thirty-seconds of regulation.
  • Hamilton gave SAU the lead with the first bucket of the bonus period and Djedjemel followed with a high-arching trifecta putting SAU up 73-68 in the first :70 seconds of play.
  • Hamilton answered a UAM bucket with a basket of her own on the ensuing trip down the floor and after the Blossoms cut their deficit to four, Hamilton knocked down a pair of free throws to put SAU out front 77-71 with 1:27 left.
  • The Blossoms would not go away quietly on Rivalry Monday as free throws from Nelsha Peterson at the 1:11 mark and a Taylor Collins three-pointer with 20 seconds left cut SAU's advantage to 77-76.
  • With 15 seconds to play, Holmes converted the second of two tries from the charity stripe, but a pair of free throws by Collins on the UAM end tied the game at 78, before Hamilton's aforementioned heroics put Southern Arkansas in the win column.
