Lady Muleriders conclude South Central Classic with 3-1 victory over GSC’s Union

Freshman Cooper registers first career double-double

DURANT, Okla. – Freshman Katy Cooper logged her first career double-double with 49 assists and 13 digs as Southern Arkansas ended their time at the South Central Classic with a 3-1 win (25-19, 24-26, 25-21, 26-24) over Union University on Saturday afternoon inside Bloomer Sullivan Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • The Lady Muleriders closed the first set on a 14-7 run after trailing 12-11.
  • Down 19-13 in the second set, Southern Arkansas again engineered a run; this time an 11-5 streak that tied the match at 24 apiece before falling 26-24.
  • Up 21-13 in the third set, Southern Arkansas suppressed a Bulldog run to take the third set, before overcoming an 18-13 deficit to win the fourth set 26-24.
  • Each team saw five players record ten or more digs as the two teams combined for 349 total attacks; the most combined attacks in a Southern Arkansas match during the South Central Classic.
  • Junior Alexia Southern registered a game-high 18 kills at an attack percentage of .318.
  • Senior Serena LeDuff logged her second-consecutive double-double with 15 kills and a dozen digs.
  • Three players recorded nine kills: senior Kaitlyn Reiner and juniors Alli O'Banion and Brittany Lampkin.
  • Junior Paige Mays led Southern Arkansas with 19 digs and four service aces.
  • Southern Arkansas' 61 kills are the most this season for the program and the most kills in a four-set match since recording 61 kills verse East Central on September 27, 2014.
 
 
FOR THE OPPOSITION
 
  • Deja Moorer logged a double-double for the Bulldogs with 13 kills and 13 assists, while Hannah Huguley collected 42 assists and 13 digs.
  • Audrey Cagle led all players with 20 digs.
 
 
OF NOTE
 
  • Four freshmen saw action for Southern Arkansas at the South Central Classic playing in a combined 28 sets. Cooper registered 70 assists and 21 digs as well as two kills, two service aces and a block assist in three matches played that included her first career start. Riley Marsh saw the most action of the foursome as she played in 14 sets and she finished the weekend with 32 digs, three service aces and a kill.Whitney Brown made her collegiate debut in the season opener and saw time in a pair of sets, while Seven Powers added a dig in three sets played.
  • Southern Arkansas and Union have matched up only one previous time since Union University joined NCAA Division II and that resulted in a 3-1 match win (22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-19) for the Lady Muleriders on September 13, 2003 in Monticello, Arkansas.
  • Since 2012, it is the third time SAU has started 2-2 after the season-opening tournament having went .500 to begin the 2012 and 2015 seasons.
  • The Great American Conference went 3-0 verse Union during the South Central Classic as host Southeastern Oklahoma State beat the Bulldogs in three sets yesterday, before East Central topped Union in five sets on Saturday.

  • Southern Arkansas continues their tournament tour to open the 2016 season as they begin play in the Bettye Wallace Invitational in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, on September 9 and 10. The Lady Muleriders open play on Friday with an 11:30 a.m. first-serve with Lindenwood University of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
