Cameron topples Southern Arkansas in four sets during day one nightcap at South Central Classic

Newcomers Southern and Cooper pace the offense for Southern Arkansas

DURANT, Okla. – Southern Arkansas suffered its first setback of the 2016 season with a four set loss (27-25, 17-25, 22-25, 9-25) to Cameron University in the nightcap of the opening day of action at the South Central Classic in Durant, Oklahoma.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • Southern Arkansas attacked a clip of just .054 over the four sets, while Cameron's attack percentage of .188 resulted in 49 kills.
  • Cameron led in all statistical categories with the exception of digs, while out-acing SAU 10-5.
  • SAU won the first set of play 27-25 as they overcame a 22-18 deficit by manufacturing a 9-3 run down the stretch to take the opening set.
  • Attack errors cost the Lady Muleriders in the second set, but the club battled back in the third set before falling 25-22.
  • Junior newcomer Alexia Southern led the Lady Muleriders in kills for the second-straight contest; this time recording 16 as the only Lady Mulerider to record double-digit kill totals.
  • Freshman setter Katy Cooper made an impactful debut for Southern Arkansas as she logged a team-leading 20 assists.
  • Junior Alli O'Banion added eight kills and senior Serena LeDuff contributed with five kills.
  • Junior Savannah Pillow followed Cooper with 13 assists, while defensive specialists Paige Mays and Hannah Rice combined for 41 digs, led by Mays' 24.
 
 
FOR THE OPPOSITION
 
  • Jenna Gillean led all players with 21 kills and five blocks.
  • Shelby Mench added a game-high 23 assists, while three players registered a dozen digs in the contest.
  • Cameron produced back-to-back sets with a hit clip of .200, before closing the final set with a team attack percentage of .323.
 
 
OF NOTE
 
  • Four freshmen saw action for Southern Arkansas on Friday. Riley Marsh and Whitney Brown made their collegiate debuts in the season opener, while Cooper saw her first career match played result in an aforementioned team-leading 20 assists and Seven Powers added a dig in the loss in her Lady Mulerider debut.
