KENNEDALE, Texas – Southern Arkansas senior pitcher
Hunter Mayo turned in his best outing of the season as he tossed seven shutout innings while scattering three hits and striking out a career-high 13 batters in SAU's 10-0 win over Northwestern Oklahoma on Monday afternoon at Paul Trantham Field in Kennedale, Texas.
The win gives the Muleriders (14-8, 7-5 GAC) the series victory over the Rangers (8-16, 6-6 GAC) after the two teams split a doubleheader on Sunday.
In Monday's game, the Muleriders would not find the hit column until
Josey Langston led off the fifth inning with a single to right field, but prior to Langston's single, SAU had already taken a 2-0 lead over Northwestern.
Both of those runs scored in the second inning as the Muleriders took advantage of a pair of walks to start the inning. The first of those walks was issued to
Jake Tisevich and once he was on first base, Tisevich wasted no time in attempting to steal second base. On the steal attempt, an errant throw by the Rangers' catcher allowed Tisevich to advance to third.
David LaFleur, the batter following Tisevich, would also draw a walk and steal second base to put runners at second and third with no outs.
In the ensuing at-bat, SAU scored their first run as
Zach Silvers grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Tisevich. A batter later, LaFleur scored as Langston hit a sacrifice fly into centerfield.
The 2-0 lead for SAU would hold until the fifth inning as the Muleriders struck for three runs in the frame to go up 5-0. In that inning, SAU would score on an errant throw by the pitcher on a sacrifice bunt attempt, on a sacrifice fly, and on a ground-rule double.
An inning later, the Muleriders plated four runs to take a 9-0 lead. In that inning, the Muleriders would score on a RBI single by
Trevor Rucker, a steal of home by
Michael Page, and a two-run homerun off the bat of
Billy Germaine.
Two innings later, the Muleriders would tally their 10th and final run as
Justin Buchanan doubled to right-centerfield, scoring Rucker. The Buchanan RBI double ended the game in the bottom of the eighth as it evoked the 10-after-7 run rule.
The Muleriders will now prepare to travel to Cleveland, Miss. on Wednesday for a mid-week clash against former conference rival, Delta State. The trip to Delta is currently scheduled for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m., but with the push back of the Northwestern Oklahoma series, SAU and Delta State may play one game. A final decision on that will be made on Tuesday.
