MAGNOLIA, Ark. – It was more of the same for the Southern Arkansas Lady Mulerider Softball team on Saturday afternoon at the SAU Softball Complex as they pitched two more shutouts, while combining for 14 runs in a pair of victories as they swept their Great American Conference-opening series with league-newcomer Oklahoma Baptist. SAU's wins on Saturday came by scores of 11-0 and 3-0.
The Lady Muleriders (12-0, 4-0 GAC) banged out 13 singles and a double on the afternoon and did not see a softball leave the yard for the second day in a row. In the circle, Southern Arkansas continued to dominate as staff co-aces
Kaylee Garner and
Kimmy Beasley each improved to 6-0 on the season.
Garner tossed four innings of one-hit softball recording three strikeouts, while Beasley fired her sixth complete game of the season, scattering four hits, while striking out eight batters.
Chancy Williams came on in relief of Garner in the fifth inning of Game One and worked around back-to-back singles to end the Lady Bison effort.
In Saturday's opener, Southern Arkansas provided early run support for Garner as they took advantage of a combined six walks, four hits, and a pair of errors while at the plate in the first two innings on their way to a 9-0 advantage. A two-out single to Kasey Jo Burgess in the top of third inning stood as only the second hit off of Garner in 11.0 innings of work this weekend. The final two runs would cross the plate via a pair of two-out RBI singles: one from
Ashton Atwell in the third inning and the other courtesy of
Liz Hudgins in the fifth inning.
The win was the eighth victory for Southern Arkansas that ended via run-rule.
In the series finale, SAU again provided early run support as a sacrifice fly from the bat of
Darian Harris plated
Brooke Goad in the bottom of the first inning. In each of the first three innings of action, Beasley worked around a Lady Bison in the scoring position and included tossing a pair of swinging strikeouts as OBU threatened with a runner at third in the visitor-half of the second inning.
The Lady Muleriders tacked on a cushion run in the third inning as
Summer Ehrig singled home
Maddie Dow who led off the inning by lacing an 0-2 pitch into centerfield. Southern Arkansas' insurance run would come in the fifth inning as Harris singled home Goad, giving SAU a 3-0 lead.
Any Oklahoma Baptist threat to salvage the series in the seventh came up short after a lead-off single to begin the inning was erased on an impressive 5-4-3 double play by Southern Arkansas that quickly retired the first two batters of the inning.
Taylor Guin led the Lady Muleriders with three hits and four RBIs on the afternoon; all of which came in the opening 11-0 win. Goad, Dow, Harris and Casada each recorded a pair of hits apiece, while Harris added three RBIs. Atwell, Casada and Dow each drew a pair of walks in the doubleheader sweep. SAU struck-out just one time in 42 at-bats on Saturday afternoon, while only committing one error in the field.
Southern Arkansas returns to action this coming weekend as they travel to Bethany, Oklahoma, for their first Great American Conference road test of the season. First-pitch for Friday's doubleheader against Southern Nazarene is scheduled for 1 p.m., while Saturday's twin bill is slated with a noon first-pitch.
