Crown produces career-high 19 points; Southern Arkansas stumbles on the road at Delta State, 60-54

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Freshman forward Kimberly Crown manufactured a career-high 19 points in a back and forth affair on Tuesday night inside Walter Sillers Coliseum, but Southern Arkansas (1-3) was unable to spoil the Lady Statesmen's home opener as Delta State (1-2) escaped with a 60-54 victory in the 36th meeting between the former Gulf South Conference foes.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • Southern Arkansas led for the first seven minutes of the contest, before Delta State took a 13-12 lead into the second quarter.
  • The Lady Muleriders opened scoring in the second frame and went on an 8-0 run through the first four minutes as they led 20-13, while the Lady Statesmen answered with a 7-0 run of their own in just 63 seconds that tied the game at 20 with 5:17 to play before intermission.
  • At the 3:14 mark of the second quarter and with SAU leading 24-22, Delta State produced a 9-4 sequence to take a three-point advantage, 31-28, into the half.
  • SAU shot over 42% from the floor in the first half and connected on over 78% of their free throws.
  • Scoring opened up in the third quarter as the teams combined for 38 points; the most of any quarter on Tuesday night. With just under a minute remaining in the frame, SAU led by five, 48-43, before the Lady Statesmen used a pair of inside baskets and two free throws in the final 25 seconds to take a 49-48 lead into the final quarter of action.
  • Defense took precedent in the final quarter, as the teams combined for just 17 points. Crown gave SAU the lead to start the period and answered a Delta State bucket 75 seconds later with a bucket of her own as SAU took a 52-51 lead. Delta State took a 53-52 lead on the next trip down the floor and SAU opened the door for the Lady Statesmen with three turnovers in the next three minutes, before Crown's final bucket came with just over three minutes to play and brought SAU to within one possession at 56-54.
  • Delta State used the free throw line to pressure SAU as a trio of Lady Mulerider three-point attempts with two and half minutes to play were unsuccessful as Delta State pulled away late, 60-54.
 
FOR SOUTHERN ARKANSAS
 
  • Crown's career night came on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor and 9-of-10 shooting from the charity stripe as the rookie grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and a pair of steals in 31 minutes of action. In her last three games, the Greenland, Arkansas, native is averaging 15.6 points per game.
  • Junior guard Anna Djedjemel followed Crown with 11 points and added team-highs in assists (5) and steals (4) in 37 minutes. Sophomore guard Jaida Harden registered ten points.
  • Junior forward Demi Read followed Crown in rebounding with six.
 
FOR THE OPPOSITION
 
  • Anissa Jackson led Delta State in scoring with 13 points and Alondrea Rush followed with a dozen points, four assists and three steals in a team-high 37 minutes of work.
  • Kaelin Kneeland paced all players with 10 rebounds and finished a point shy of a double-double effort.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
 
  • The Lady Statesmen outscored SAU 21-9 in points off of turnovers as SAU turned it over 23 times compared to DSU's 16, while Delta State owned a +8 margin in fast break points.
  • Crown led an inside attack for Southern Arkansas as the Lady Muleriders won the points in the paint battle, 26-18.
  • Southern Arkansas was outrebounded 34-29, while only grabbing three offensive boards to Delta State's 15.
  • The game featured 12 lead changes and nine tied scores.
