MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Winners of four-straight Great American Conference games, the Southern Arkansas Mulerider Basketball team will look to keep that streak in-tact tonight inside Steelman Fieldhouse with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off with Arkansas-Monticello.
The Muleriders (8-6, 5-3 GAC) are currently in a tie for fourth-place with Southern Nazarene in the league standings with a pair of matchups against Harding and Ouachita Baptist, both tied for first, on this week's docket. SAU is currently 4-2 on the road this season with their latest road win coming this past Saturday in an 83-80 victory at Arkansas Tech.
Four players pace the Muleriders with double-figure scoring averages, led by
Jaron Davis' 16.6 points per game. Davis also leads SAU with 67 assists and 20 steals, while shooting just under 90% from the charity stripe.
Deon Andrews follows Davis in scoring with an average of 12.6 ppg, while
CJ Elkins and
Denarious Lockhart score at a clip of 11 points per game with the latter hauling in a team-leading 7.2 rebounds per game.
Southern Arkansas ranks in the conference's top-five in four offensive categories including field goal percentage (3
rd/45.8%), rebounding offense (3
rd/39.3rpg), scoring margin (+3.6/4
th) and scoring offense (4
th/77.9%). The Muleriders employ eight players that average 18 or more minutes a contest led by Davis' clip of 34.3 minutes/contest.
Defensively, SAU places fifth in the GAC in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to a shooting clip of 43.5%, and fifth in blocked shots per game with 3.2. The Muleriders are third in steals per game at 6.6, .5 steals behind UAM's league-leading average of 7.1.
The Weevils (5-9, 3-5 GAC) are 2-2 in their last four league games, with the latest result coming as a 79-71 win against Henderson State at home. UAM is 4-1 at home this season with their lone blemish coming in a 77-61 defeat to Southwestern Oklahoma State.
UAM averages 72.7 points per game, shooting 43.7% from the floor and owns the GAC's second best free throw percentage at 71.6%. Arkansas-Monticello shoots just over 38% from beyond the arc; the fourth-best clip in the conference. The Weevils own the GAC's best turnover margin at +2.43.
Jamal Peterson leads UAM in scoring at 14.4 points per game, while Richard Benedyth adds13.8 ppg. Vicktor Arnick chips in with 10.4 ppg. Andre Brown leads the team rebounds per game with 7.1. Six players boast ten or more steals, led by Benedyth's 17, leading to the aforementioned top steals average in the conference. Seven players average 20 or more minutes per game.
