MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas Lady Muleriders earned a 3-0 win over Division I Grambling State in their first appearance inside the W.T. Watson Athletic Center in 2015 as senior setter
Taylor Reaume produced her first double-double of the season with 36 assists and 10 digs. The win was the fourth home opening victory under the direction of sixth-year head coach
Steven Gream.
The Lady Muleriders (3-2) attacked at a clip of .247, their second highest mark of the early season, and held the Lady Tigers (1-5) to a mere attack percentage of .100. Reaume continued to deliver offensively as she collected the previously mentioned 36 assists while spreading the floor as five Lady Muleriders registered five or more kills lead by nine kills apiece from classmates
Shelby Lauterbach and
Emilie Aase.
SAU controlled the opening set early as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead, before pushing their advantage to 12-2. A pair of 3-0 runs from GSU cut the Lady Mulerider lead in half, 16-8, but two kills apiece from Aase and junior
Gillian Newman pushed SAU out front 20-13.
Grambling State would play the Lady Muleriders close in the second set as the Lady Tigers fought to a one point deficit, 11-10. Southern Arkansas would take the momentum as the Lady Muleriders engineered a 6-0 run to distance themselves, 18-11. However, the Lady Tigers put together a 6-1 run to pull within a pair at 19-17 before SAU pulled away for a 25-21 set two win.
A quick 14-4 lead started the pivotal third set as Southern Arkansas refused to let the Lady Tigers spark a run en route to a 25-16 set three victory and match win.
Defensively, the Lady Muleriders responded well against a varied Lady Tiger attack as three players recorded double-digit dig totals led by
Hannah Rice's 15 followed by
Brittney Johnson's 11 and Reaume's 10.
The Lady Muleriders return to the court this weekend as they travel to Ada, Oklahoma, to compete in the South Central Classic hosted by East Central University. First serve on Friday, September 11, is scheduled for noon against Texas A&M-Commerce followed by a 5 p.m. match with Oklahoma Panhandle State University.
