Lady Muleriders open series against Henderson State with DH split

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas Lady Mulerider softball team opened play in a key Great American Conference series on Saturday afternoon by splitting with Henderson State as SAU took game one 7-2, but dropped the second contest 6-2 in what was supposed to be a road series, before winter weather forced school officials to relocate the games to Magnolia.

The Lady Muleriders (12-7, 6-3) executed when they needed to the most as they scored all seven of their game one runs with two outs to aid starter Jami Godwin as she went five innings to pick up her second win of the year.

Ashton Atwell hit her eighth homerun of the season with an opposite-field shot in the top of the first to give SAU, visitors on the scoreboard, an early lead. But a sac-bunt plated a run for the Reddies in the bottom of the first to tie the game at one.

SAU would take the momentum back in the top of the second as Courtney Hudgins laced a triple to left field that scored Leigha Doyle and Sarah Higginbotham to give SAU a 3-1 lead.

Godwin induced three groundouts in the next half inning before two Lady Mulerider runs scored courtesy of a fielder's choice error from the bat of Doyle. Godwin would work a clean third and fourth inning before HSU added their final run on a double by Sarah Gipson. Maddie Dow would add two insurance runs on a no-doubt homerun to centerfield.

Chancy Williams relieved Godwin in the sixth and held the Reddies hitless over the final two frames to ensure the series-opening victory.

In the second game, HSU starter Ashlyn White scattered seven Lady Mulerider hits, allowing only two runs in five innings of work. A three-run homerun in the first inning and a throwing error in the second inning gave the Reddies a three-run lead, 4-1, on SAU starter Miranda Cuff.

Doyle plated SAU's lone early run with a second inning double that plated Chelsea Ivy.

White aided her own cause with a two-run homerun in the third inning that cushioned the HSU lead 6-1. Hudgins would score on a two-out double by Darian Harris in the fifth the cut the SAU deficit to 6-2.

Southern Arkansas would threaten in the top of the seventh with runners at first and second, but a fly ball putout and back-to-back ground ball outs ended the threat.

Taylor Guin and Doyle both contributed with three hits on the day, while Dow and Hudgins each added a pair of RBIs.

The Lady Muleriders conclude the weekend series with Henderson tomorrow morning, March 8, with a doubleheader scheduled for 11 a.m.
