Lady Mulerider offense stymied in doubleheader sweep by Arkansas Tech

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The generally potent Southern Arkansas softball lineup was held in check on Sunday evening by the Arkansas Tech pitching staff as the Lady Muleriders were shutout in game one and limited to one run in the nightcap as ATU captured both ends of the doubleheader to earn the series sweep.

In the opener, Arkansas Tech (18-6, 9-3 GAC) got on the board early on a leadoff homerun down the right field line in the top of the first. Two innings later, Tech added two more runs to make it a 3-0 game. In the fifth, Tech opened the game up with three runs to push their lead to 6-0. One more run came home in the sixth for the Golden Suns to account for their seven runs in the game.

The seven runs by Tech in game one were in support of starter Sydnee Clark, who would pitch a shutout while holding the Lady Muleriders (14-11, 6-7 GAC) without a hit.  Clark's stat line, however, was not completely clean as she walked three and hit two more.

In the nightcap, Tech once again jumped out to an early lead thanks to a homerun, this time a two-run homer in the first to put the Golden Suns up 2-0. Tech would strike for four more runs in the second and one in the third to build a 7-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Muleriders would push across their lone run of the day on a bases loaded walk to Courtney Hudgins. Tech answered back in the next half inning with four more runs to make it an 11-1 game. The Lady Muleriders would go relatively quietly in the bottom of the fifth to bring the game to its conclusion.

The Lady Muleriders will now prepare for a mid-week conference doubleheader at home against Arkansas-Monticello on Wednesday, March 25 at 2 p.m.
