MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas Lady Mulerider softball team collected a Great American Conference doubleheader spilt against Ouachita Baptist as they suffered a 5-0 shutout loss in game one, but bounced back to take the second game, 7-6 on a very cold Saturday afternoon at Lady Mulerider Field.
Ouachita Baptist scored all five of their runs in the first three innings, while Lady Tiger (5-10, 1-5 GAC) starting pitcher Macy Nantz held SAU to only four hits; two coming from the bat of
Maddie Dow.
In game two, OBU plated a run in the first inning off of SAU starter
Miranda Cuff, but the Lady Muleriders (10-6, 4-2 GAC) answered in the bottom half of the frame with bases loaded walks to
Audrey Farfan and
Taylor Guin to give SAU a 2-1 lead.
A RBI single in the top of the second tied the game at two, before Ouachita took a 4-2 lead in the top of the third inning courtesy of a two-run homerun. With two outs in the bottom of the third inning,
Summer Ehrig doubled home Farfan to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Cuff would work around a runner at third in the fourth inning and her teammates would give her the lead in the bottom half of the frame.
Dow blasted a solo homerun to lead off the inning before Guin collected her second bases loaded walk that scored Farfan to give SAU a 5-4 lead.
Cuff stranded two runners in the fifth inning and Dow padded the lead with an RBI single that scored
Courtney Hudgins to give SAU a 6-4 advantage.
A two-out, two-run homerun by OBU in the visiting half of the sixth tied the contest at six. With two outs in the bottom half, Hudgins singled home
Chelsea Ivy to give SAU the 7-6 lead before
Jami Godwin worked a perfect 7
th inning as she sat down the side in order to give Southern Arkansas the doubleheader split.
Cuff picked up her fifth win of the year to improve to 5-1. Godwin struck out one in a blemish-free seventh inning to earn her first save of the year. Dow finished the day with four hits and two RBIs along with a run scored. In the second game, Farfan scored twice and Guin collected two RBIs on two walks as SAU took advantage of 10 game two walks, while seven Lady Muleriders registered a hit.
Weather permitting Southern Arkansas will conclude the Great American Conference series with Ouachita Baptist on Sunday, March 1 with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon.
