MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas men's basketball team returned to its winning ways on Thursday night while also sending their four seniors,
Alre'k Brown,
Aaron Francis,
Tyrell Taylor, and
Chauncy Williams, out on high note in their final home game at the W.T. Watson Center as SAU cruised past rival Arkansas-Monticello, 105-85.
Six different Muleriders would score in double figures as SAU (15-10, 11-8 GAC) eclipsed the 100-point mark for the second time this season; both times coming at home and against GAC opponents as well.
Leading the way in scoring for SAU was senior guard
Chauncy Williams as he turned in a 24-point performance on the strength of six made three-pointers. Just behind Williams was
Jaron Davis, who scored 23 points in his return to action after missing the previous three games due to injury.
Tyrell Taylor and
Kevin Jordan were next in scoring with 14 points apiece and each would also notch double-doubles as Taylor dished out a season-high 11 assists and Jordan pulled down 10 boards. Rounding out double-figure scoring for the Muleriders were
DJ Frye and
Deon Andrews as Frye ended with 12 points and Andrews with 11.
As a team, the Muleriders would shot a season-best 57% (36-of-63) overall from the floor. SAU would also have a season-high in assists with 26 as a team. From beyond the arc, the Muleriders connected on 13 shot attempts, tying their second-best total this season. On the boards, SAU would out-rebound the Boll Weevils (7-17, 3-16 GAC) 42-35.
The win ended a four-game skid and keeps SAU within one game of second-place with one more game left in the regular season. The Muleriders will play that regular season finale on the road at Henderson State on Saturday, February 28. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
