MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Mason Mallard,
Trevor Rucker,
William Townsend, and
Trevor Ward all went yard for the No. 6-ranked Southern Arkansas baseball team in their 15-1 drubbing of Lincoln University in non-conference action on Saturday evening inside Walker Stadium at Goodheart Field.
The first of those four homeruns hit for the Muleriders (7-5) on Saturday was a three-run shot that came off the bat of
Trevor Rucker in the second inning with SAU already leading 4-1. Rucker's bomb was his second of the season and capped a six-run second for the Muleriders.
In the Muleriders' next at-bat,
Trevor Ward launched his first career big fly as hammered a solo homer off the scoreboard in right field. Two innings later, Mallard and Townsend joined in on the long ball fun as each belted two-run dingers to left and left-centerfield, respectively. For Townsend, it was his first homerun of the season, while it was the third of the year for Mallard, who currently leads the team.
All told, the four homeruns were a part of a season-high 14-hit attack for the Muleriders that saw 10 different players register a hit and three collect multiple hits. Among those with multiple hits were
Billy Germaine (2-for-3),
Chase Harvey (2-for-5), and
Trevor Ward (3-for-5).
Ward's three hits came in his first three at-bats and left him a double shy of the cycle as he singled his first time up, homered his next plate appearance, and tripled in the fifth. In his last at-bat of the game, Ward belted a liner into right field and it looked as if he would get the double to hit for the cycle, but a diving catch by Lincoln's right fielder unfortunately took it away.
While the Muleriders' offense enjoyed a successful night, the pitching staff remained outstanding as five pitchers would combine to limit the Blue Tigers (0-2) to one unearned run on seven hits while striking out 14.
Hunter Mayo got the start and earned his third win of the season as he pitched five strong innings, scattering six hits, walking one, allowing one unearned run and striking out six batters. Four relievers, who were all making their season debuts, then followed with all four pitching a scoreless inning. Combined, the SAU bullpen would allow one hit while striking out eight batters.
The Muleriders and Blue Tigers will play again on Sunday afternoon with a first-pitch time set for 1 p.m.
