Quincy uses 3-ball to drop Muleriders, 100-76

QUINCY, Ill. – Host-school Quincy University connected on 17 three-point field goals for the game on Saturday afternoon to help lift the Hawks past Southern Arkansas by a score of 100-76 in the Quincy University Holiday Tournament presented by Subway.

Before the Hawks (6-4) caught fire from beyond the arc, the Muleriders (4-5) had grabbed an early lead as SAU jumped out to a 7-0 advantage over the first four minutes or so of the game. At the 15:32 mark of the first half, however, the Hawks finally got on the scoreboard as Von Washington III hit a three-pointer.

That initial three-pointer would spark a 9-0 run by Quincy as two more trifectas followed over the next minute to spring the Hawks on top, 9-7. The Muleriders did respond on their next possession after the Hawks took the lead as CJ Elkins made good on a pair of free throws to knot the game at nine-all with 14:14 remaining in the first half.

On Quincy's next possession, however, they would regain the lead once more, this time on a jumper in the paint by Joseph Tagarelli. From there, the Hawks would go on to increase their lead to as much as 14 points before closing out the opening half with that margin of a lead.

Out of the break, the two teams would start out hot in their shooting as neither team missed a field goal until the 16:43 mark of the second half. During that time, SAU was 3-for-3 from the floor while Quincy was 4-for-4. After that initial burst of scoring, Quincy held a 20-point lead, 64-44, because the difference during that bevy of made shots between both teams was the fact that Quincy had a trio of three-point plays, a pair of three-point baskets and one conventional three-point play, and a pair of free throws added in as well.

From there, the Hawks would only build upon their lead, reaching an apex of 39 points, 90-51, with 9:27 left in the game. Over that remaining 9:27, however, the Muleriders would out-score the Hawks 25-10 to bring the game to its final score of 100-76.

The leading scorer for the Muleriders was Jaron Davis as he scored 21 points. Davis has now scored 20 or more points in six of nine games played this season. Next in scoring was Denarious Lockhart as he scored 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting in his first action this season for the Muleriders. Lockhart would also register his first double-double of the season as he hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds. Elkins and Deon Andrews would also score in double figures for the Muleriders as Elkins scored 12 points and Andrews added 10.

The Muleriders will have a quick turnaround as they will play Truman State on Sunday afternoon to conclude their time in Quincy, Ill. at the Quincy Holiday Tournament presented by Subway. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
