Muleriders go over the century mark in 109-80 drubbing of Arkansas Tech

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – On a night that was billed as "Wreck Tech Night" at the W.T. Watson Center, the Southern Arkansas men's basketball team took matters a step further as they completely dominated Arkansas Tech en route to an impressive 109-80 win on Thursday night.

The domination that was on display by the Muleriders (13-5, 9-3 GAC) throughout the night showed up most emphatically on the boards as SAU pulled down an amazing 63 rebounds (42 defensive, 21 offensive) while only allowing 35 rebounds by the Wonder Boys (9-11, 5-7 GAC). The +28 rebounding margin for the Muleriders on Thursday night against Tech was the most since the very first game under head coach Andy Sharpe in the 2012-13 season when SAU had a +29 advantage on the glass against Champion Baptist.

Thanks to the 21 offensive rebounds, SAU was able to get numerous second and sometimes even three or more opportunities to score; and score they did in those situations. For the game, the Muleriders would rack up 32 second-chance points, compared to just two from the Wonder Boys. 24 of those second-chance points came in the first half as the Muleriders took a 15-point lead into the break, 55-40.

In the first half alone, SAU would put up 45 shots from the floor, making 20 of them for a 44% field goal percentage. Additionally, the Muleriders would knock down 10-of-12 free throws in the opening half.

Coming out of the break, the Muleriders did not let up one bit as they continued to impose their will on both sides of the ball against the Wonder Boys. Another area that reflected the dominance by the Muleriders came in the paint. After registering 26 points in the paint in the first half, the Muleriders would add 22 more points in the paint in the second half to end with 48 inside. On the other end of the court, the Muleriders defended the paint extremely well as they blocked six shots as a team and only allowed the Wonder Boys to score only 20 points inside.

Individually, numerous Muleriders shined bright as six different players scored in double figures with Kevin Jordan leading the way with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Jordan would match that scoring total in rebounds as he pulled down a career-high 17 boards (11 defensive) for his first double-double as a Mulerider. Alre'k Brown also had a double-double, his sixth this season, as he went for 15 points and 10 rebounds. Other Muleriders to score in double figures were Jaron Davis (16 points), Deon Andrews (12 points), Desmond Champion (12 points) and Aaron Francis (10 points).

The Muleriders will now prepare for a tough road task this Saturday as they travel to Searcy to play Harding in the fabled Rhodes Field House. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

NOTES: The 109 points vs. Arkansas Tech is a Great American Conference record for the most points scored against a conference opponent.
