Winter Park, Fla. – The Southern Arkansas Volleyball team held a 7-3 advantage in the deciding fifth set, but the Wolves limited SAU to just a .111 (7-18-5) hitting percentage and scored eight of the last 10 points to steal the match in five sets, as the Lady Muleriders fell 25-21, 17-25, 25-21, 29-31, 11-15, Saturday night in their final match at the Rollins College Invitational in Warden Arena.
SAU (0-4) had five different attackers record a kill to push the first set to a 9-9 tie. Down 11-12, the Lady Muleriders scored six straight points on five West Georgia errors and an ace from senior
Amanda Monge to take a commanding 17-12 lead. With a 19-13 SAU lead, West Georgia (2-2) scored five of the next six points before sophomore
Hailey McNee put the set out of reach with a kill followed by a service ace.
West Georgia took an early 4-1 lead in the second set on three kills. The Wolves had a 5-2 lead when each team recorded three-point runs to make the score 8-5. West Georgia utilized three more three-point runs to steal the set. The Wolves held the advantage in kills (12-5) and hitting percentage (.400 – (-.125)) in the set.
In a 7-7 tie in the third set, SAU scored four straight to take an 11-7 lead. With a 24-18 SAU advantage, West Georgia scored three straight before freshman
Alli O'Banion recorded a kill to secure the set. The Lady Muleriders rode Monge's six kills and two blocks in the set.
Late in the fourth set, West Georgia had SAU on the ropes, leading 24-21 before the Lady Muleriders fought back with three straight points. Back and forth the teams went until SAU committed two attacking errors with the score tied at 29 to end the set in the Wolves' favor.
Monge led all attackers with 14 kills complimented by an efficient .520 (14-25-1) hitting percentage, setter
Taylor Reaume dished 41 assists and libero
Hannah Rice dug 26 balls in the contest.
The Lady Muleriders will host their home opener Tuesday against Ouachita Baptist at W.T. Watson Center at 6:30 p.m.
