Lady Muleriders edged by Savage Storm in close conference battle

Magnolia, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas volleyball team got a career-high 18 kills from senior Amanda Monge, but ultimately fell, 1-3 (25-19, 21-25, 22-25, 22-25), to Southeastern Oklahoma at W.T. Watson Friday night.

Monge took control offensively early, smashing six kills in the first set. With SAU (3-12, 1-3 GAC) leading 23-19 in the first set, junior setter Taylor Reaume would record a kill before Southeastern Oklahoma (6-7, 1-1 GAC) would mishandle the ball to give the Lady Muleriders the first set.

Tied at 5-5 in the second set, the Lady Muleriders would commit four consecutive attacking errors fall behind by four. SAU would bring the set to within reach at 19-22 after a 3-0 run before the two teams traded points. The Savage Storm would get the final two points of the set on kills from Courtney Miller and Julia Benford.

SAU fell behind 15-21 in the third set before making a 6-0 run to tie the set at 21, complimented offensively by a Hailey McNee service ace, two kills from Monge and a kill apiece from freshmen Alli O'Banion and Savannah Pillow. After a Savage Storm kill, Monge got another kill before Southeastern closed out the set, scoring three consecutive points from two Benford kills and a service ace.

The Lady Muleriders would find themselves in another hole at 9-13 in the fourth set after three consecutive Savage Storm blocks. SAU would rally back to tie the match at 20 with help from Monge's powerful jump serve. Unfortunately, Southeastern would score five of the next seven points to steal the match.

Monge's career-high 18 kills were complimented by an efficient .441 (18-3-34) attacking percentage. Monge recorded at least four kills in each set. O'Banion also recorded 10 kills on a .444 (10-2-18) attacking percentage. Reaume recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 41 assists and 13 digs.

The Lady Muleriders look to bounce back tomorrow versus another conference opponent, East Central, at W.T. Watson Center. First serve is set for 2 p.m. CT.
