MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Junior right-hander
Janson Carr pitched a three-hit shutout in the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader against Southeastern Oklahoma as he helped the No. 4-ranked Southern Arkansas baseball team capture the series victory with a 1-0 win in the rubber game.
Carr's outstanding performance on the mound, in which he allowed just three bloop singles and struck out seven in seven innings of work, came after a disappointing loss for the Muleriders (27-8, 14-7 GAC) in the opening game on Sunday. In that game, a quartet of Savage Storm (15-16, 7-11 GAC) pitchers pitched themselves into tight spots throughout, but the Muleriders were unable to come up with the timely hit, eventually falling 7-3.
In the second game of the day, the Muleriders' offense would still find it difficult to come up with the big hit against the Savage Storm pitching staff as game-three starter, Nick Johnson kept SAU off the board through the first three innings.
After Carr pitched his third straight perfect inning in the top of the fourth, the Muleriders would score the game's lone run in the bottom of that frame.
Trevor Rucker would lead off that inning for SAU with a single to right field. After a successful steal of second, Rucker was moved to third base thanks to a sacrifice bunt by
Korey Keith.
With the go-ahead run at third base with one out, and the game playing out like a tight pitcher's duel, Southeastern Oklahoma drew their entire infield in, hoping to cut the run down at the plate on a groundball. That strategy would pay off for the Savage Storm as Johnson would induce a grounder to his drawn-in shortstop. On the play, Rucker would hold a third, making the only play available at first base.
Now with Rucker at third and two outs, the Muleriders would have a break go their way as
Josh Rodriguez hit a ball that went under the glove of the Southeastern Oklahoma shortstop for an error. That run-scoring error was costly as it accounted for the only run that game.
Over the next two innings, Carr would surrender lead off Texas-league singles as the Savage Storm looked to put together rallies. In each of those innings, the fifth and sixth, Carr would induce inning-ending double plays to hold the Savage Storm scoreless.
In the seventh, Carr returned to the mound and left little drama in collecting his first shutout of the season as he retired the side in order.
The Muleriders will remain at home and close out their eight-game home-stand with a non-conference game against NAIA power LSU-Shreveport on Tuesday, April 1. First-pitch for that game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
