Lady Muleriders avenge early season loss; defeat Southeastern Oklahoma, 57-53

Box Score

DURANT, Okla. – The Southern Arkansas women's basketball team exacted some revenge against Southeastern Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon as the Lady Muleriders went on the road and defeated the Savage Storm by a score of 57-53.

After falling behind 3-0 on the game's first bucket, the Lady Muleriders (11-10, 7-8 GAC) grabbed their one and only needed lead of the game at the 16:32 mark when Ashley Riggles buried a three-pointer to break a four-all tie. From there, the Lady Muleriders would grow their lead out to as much as nine points before heading into the break ahead by six points, 28-22.

In that first half, the Savage Storm (12-8, 9-5 GAC) found it very difficult to generate any kind of offense against the Lady Muleriders' defense as SOSU was limited to a 24% shooting clip after making just 5-of-21 shots from the floor. With all the missed field goals by the Savage Storm in the first half, the Lady Muleriders made sure there were not many second-chance opportunities as they pulled down 17 defensive rebounds.

Coming out of the break, the Savage Storm would open up the second half on an 8-2 run to knot the game at 30-all with 16:35 left in the game. A made layup by Miranda Grier on the Lady Muleriders' ensuing possession kept SAU in the lead. From there, the Lady Muleriders would remain in the lead and held a lead as large as 11 points with 9:12 left in the game.

Trailing by 10 points, 50-40, with 8:08 left, the Savage Storm would launch one last comeback effort as they went on a five-minute 11-2 run to pull to within a point, 52-51. As they did the last time the Savage Storm threatened their lead, the Lady Muleriders got a bucket on their ensuing possession to stave off the threat.

That would be as close as the Savage Storm would get the rest of the way out as they went 1-for-9 (0-for-5 3PT) from the floor over the final three minutes of the game.

Two Lady Muleriders would score in double figures with Chanel Miller leading the way with 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Behind Miller was Miranda Grier with 10 points. Grier also picked up her third double-double of the season as she pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Lady Muleriders will now return home for a pair of games starting with a matchup against Southern Nazarene on Thursday, February 13. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
