Tucker’s late free throws lift Lady Muleriders to a 69-67 victory over Ouachita Baptist

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Junior guard Tierra Tucker was fouled with less than 10 seconds to play in a tied ballgame and knocked down two free throws to put away Ouachita Baptist by a score of 69-67 Saturday afternoon at W.T. Watson Center.

SAU (4-4, 2-2 GAC) junior forward Rosa Bryant got fouled in the process of making a layup and sunk the free throw to stretch the Lady Mulerider lead to 10-4 at 13:39 in the first half. OBU (3-5, 0-2 GAC) would respond by going on an 8-0 run over the next 1:51 to take a slight 12-10 advantage at the 11:48 mark.

After freshman Carlee Earls drained a trey later in the half to put the Lady Muleriders ahead 23-19, the Tigers would counter with a 7-0 run that stretched 2:20, ultimately giving OBU a 26-23 lead with 3:15 left in the opening half. SAU, however, closed out the opening stanza on a 9-0 run with three points apiece from Earls and senior Brianna Sifford.

The Lady Muleriders held a 32-22 rebounding advatange at the break, including a 10-4 edge on the offensive end. Earls found her stroke early, making 3-of-4 from beyond the arc for a team-high nine points while Bryant paced SAU with seven points and seven boards.

With SAU holding a 40-36 second-half lead, the Tigers scored nine straight including five points from Taylor Bowles. Bryant would respond with back-to-back layups before senior Aarika Reyna drained a trey to put the Lady Muleriders back on top 47-45 with 11:13 to go.

Teams would match four-point runs to keep SAU up by two at the 8:25 mark. The Lady Muleriders would score 12 of the next 16 points to go up by 10 at 63-53 with 4:31 to play. The Tigers, however, would not go away lightly, scoring the next nine points with seven from Bowles to bring the game within a point at the 1:42 mark.

Leading 65-64, Sifford knocked down a jumper before OBU's Breanna Harris drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 65 with 33 seconds left. Tucker drove into the lane with the clock winding down and was fouled. That is when Tucker knocked down both free throws in a one-and-one situation and OBU's three-point attempt would bounce off of the rim to seal the game for SAU.

The Lady Muleriders had four double-digit scorers. Earls and Sifford led the way with 12 points apiece, and Bryant converted a double-double, collecting 11 points and 11 rebounds. Tucker also finished in double-digit scoring with 10 points.

SAU finished the game with a 55-34 rebound advantage, a 40-14 points in the paint advantage and a 42-11 bench points advantage.

The Lady Muleriders return to action after the final examination period on Dec. 13, heading to Russellville to face Arkansas Tech.
