COMMERCE, Texas – Senior guard
Chauncy Williams drained eight three-pointers and scored a game-high 26 points but a 17-3 run early in the first half by Texas A&M-Commerce was ultimately too much to overcome as Southern Arkansas would fall to TAMUC by a score of 93-85.
The eight made three-pointers in the game by Williams were a single-game career-high and are the most makes from beyond the arc in a game by a Mulerider since the 2006-07 season when Brandon Williams hit eight three-pointers against Ecclesia College on January 4, 2013.
As a team, the Muleriders (2-2) would hit 15 three-pointers, which are the most makes as a team since the 1998-99 season when SAU drained 16 treys against Christian Brothers. Helping the Muleriders reach that mark was the addition of seven made three-pointers by junior point guard
Jaron Davis.
Statistically, the Muleriders would shoot 42% (30-of-72) overall from the floor in the game while the Lions (6-2) would finish shooting at a 47% clip (27-of-58). In the first half, the Lions seemingly couldn't miss as they shot 55% overall from the floor (16-of-29) while going 7-of-14 (50%) from three-point range. On the other end of the court, the Muleriders shot 40% from the floor (12-of-30) while going 4-of-12 (33%) from long range.
The field goal percentage disparity resulted, in part, to a 14-point Lion lead, 48-34, heading into the break.
In the second half however, things would change as the Muleriders got the hot shooting hand while the Lions cooled off considerably. As a result, SAU would out-score the Lions by six points as the Muleriders fought hard and pulled the deficit down to eight points before the final buzzer sounded.
Fueling that relentless comeback effort was a 26-11 run to close out the game over the final 7:44 by the Muleriders. During that stretch, SAU would turn the ball over just once while burying seven three-pointers. The main scoring catalyst during the run was Williams as he scored 15 points, all on three-pointers.
On the glass, SAU would come down with 37 rebounds with 16 coming on the offensive end.
Alvin Braddock, in his first extended action this season, led the team in rebounding with eight (six offensive). Behind Braddock was
Alre'k Brown with seven (four offense).
For the game, three Muleriders would score in double figures with Williams leading the way with 26 points. Davis was next with 21 points while
DJ Frye added 12 points. Davis would also finish with a game-high six assists.
The Muleriders will now return home for a pair of conference games as they play host to Harding University on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. and then welcoming in Ouachita Baptist University on Saturday at 4 p.m.
