Bryant, Miller lead women’s basketball to opening weekend victory

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Senior Chanel Miller and junior Rosa Bryant scored 12 points apiece to finish  the Southern Arkansas women's basketball weekend with a 70-64 victory over Angelo State Friday afternoon at Wisdom Gym.

SAU (1-1) used its high-pressure, high-intensity defense to force 28 ASU (0-2) turnovers, recording 17 steals in the process. The Lady Mulerider defense held the Rambelles to 33 percent (10-30) shooting from the field, including 1-for-11 from beyond the 3-point line.

Senior Brianna Sifford and junior Cemetra Jenkins knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers and senior Barvion Wyatt followed with a jumper to complete an 8-0 SAU run over 1:19 to put the Lady Muleriders ahead 18-10 early. ASU held an 18-15 scoring advantage for the rest of the first half, but Bryant made a last-second tipin to put SAU up 33-30 at the break.

The Rambelles outscored the Lady Muleriders 17-15 over a nine-minute span to start the second half, putting the score at 48-47 in SAU's favor. The Lady Muleriders would then make their move, going on an 8-2 run over the next 2:24 and forcing three Rambelle turnovers to take a 56-49 lead. ASU made two free throws with 16 seconds left to make it a one-possession game at 67-64, but Miller, the reigning GAC Newcomer of the Year, made two free throws to put the game out of reach.

Bryant and Miller also led the Lady Muleriders in the rebounding department with six and five rebounds respectively. Senior Miranda Grier contributed with a team-high four steals. The SAU bench outscored the ASU bench 38-17.

Miller was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 12 points and 3.5 rebounds in the Lady Muleriders' two games this weekend.

The Lady Muleriders return to action in their home and conference-opener versus Southern Nazarene on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in W.T. Watson Center.
